As you may know the divers at Abyss Scuba Diving are helping David Powter who is conducting a research project on Port Jackson sharks at the Central Coast Campus of the University of Newcastle. McLaughlin carried out the last serious research into this regular visitor to Sydney in 1969. These studies revealed that the Port Jackson Shark makes annual migrations of up to 850 kilometers along the coast. It is time we knew more about this annual visitor to Sydney. This information may be critical for the long term future of the species.

Divers obtaining data and taging port jackson sharks

Abyss Scuba diving are tagging sharks to gain a better understanding of their activity, If you are an Advanced open water diver or have logged at least 20 dives and you would like to help in the tagging program then please check out our dive program and come and help with this project. The more divers who help with this process then the more information we can gain and the more useful the data shall be.
