No other piece of life-support equipment has contributed as much to the safety, ease and enjoyment of diving as the BCD. From providing one-touch neutral buoyancy at any depth, to positive buoyancy for surface floating, to a hang rack for all manner of tanks and accessories, the BCD does everything for us except Greathe, propel or keep us warm.
Thing to look for when buying a BCD
The most important thing about a BCD is fit! If it doesn't fit, a BCD is not only uncomfortable but unsafe. When shopping for a BCD the only way to be sure a BC fits is to try it on with the same wetsuit or dry suit you'll be wearing in the water, and then see how the BCD feels both inflated and deflated.
For a long time, only a minority of divers used weight-integrated BCDs but the tide has turned. Weight integration have been refined and today more divers are strapping them on.
Back buoyancy has become the most significant trend in BC design of the past decade. Even jacket-style BC designs have continued to move more of their buoyancy to the rear. It's hard to deny the advantages.
The advantages of Back Buoyancy are:
Tends to place you in the optimum underwater swimming position--horizontal with head slightly higher than feet;
Floats you higher out of the water when swimming in the best surface position--on your back with your feet lower than your shoulders;
Produces little or no squeeze when fully inflated, while also accommodating a greater range of size variation for a correct fit;
Clears the chest area, giving better gear accessibility, a better look for photos, less congestion and more freedom of movement;
Provides more comfort for many divers.
