Ocean Care Day 2000

Weedy Seadragon Search

Sunday 3rd December was Ocean Care day and we celebrated by having a great day out at Kurnell National Park counting the Weedy Seadragon population. Dragon Search was conducting a census of Weedy Seadragons across the state and we helped out by counting the Weedy Seadragons at the Kurnell. During the day we did two dives and covered the area from the Leap right around to the Monument. Divers split up into three different groups and searched different areas during the dives. We were very lucky with the weather and we had a perfect sunny day and a relatively flat ocean.

Our official results of the Weedy Count were as follows: -

Males with Eggs 6
Males without eggs 5
Females 10
No idea what sex 12
---------------------------
Total no. of Weedys 38
Most of the weedys counted were over 18cm long and they were found in depths ranging from 8m to 21m. Other species spotted during the day included: - Seahorses, giant cuttlefish, goat fish, pygmy leatherjackets, several other species of leatherjackets, morays, yellow tail, morwong, some type of rays, squid, octopus, oldwives, scorpion cod, Blue groper.

Abyss Scuba Diving would like to thank everyone (John Valarezo, Sara Valarezo, Simon Ashwin, Andrea Debbage, Silviya Crnomaric, Steve Reid, Greg Marshall, Rob Dissington, Rob Kaszonyi, Ryan Dalley, Cherie Adams, Daniel Kelly, Andrew Dolan-Brown, Robyn Hutt, Samantha Letts, Rachael Letts, Melanie Conroy, Steve Darke, Linda Letts, Lisa Hutt, Teraesa Ashworth & Dita Kruze) who came along to help out with the count and for making the day a lot of fun also. The guys out at Dragon Search use this type of information to help them learn more about the Weedy Seadragons and their population numbers across the state. Thank you to all the divers and non-divers who helped out on the day. Also thanks to Simon for providing the free National Park passes for everyone who helped out on the day.
