Padi Aware International Clearn up Day

Last Saturday a small group of divers and non-divers headed out to Sutherland Point at Kurnell for a day of diving and collecting rubbish from both under the water and down around the beach area. Thanks to all of you who tore yourself away from the Olympic coverage on TV and turned up and helped us clearn up one of our local dive sites. Diving there was Lawson, Robert, Carl, Robyn, Rachael and Kellie, and looking after us in the food department and clearning the beach was Rachael, Linda, Lisa and Sam for a while before she had to head off to work at the Olympics. The weather was lovely and in-between our rubbish collecting we had a BBQ and some lovely homemade Anzac biscuits (Thanks for cooking the biscuits Lisa).

The shore seemed to have a lot more rubbish than the actual underwater environment and our three non-divers had a big job picking up rubbish from along the beach area. Most of it seemed to be bits of foam, food wrappers and beverage bottles. The under the water the situation was not too bad with beer bottles, cans of drink and food wrappers of various sorts being the main items collected. While looking for rubbish we managed to also get in some nice diving. The Kurnell area at present seems to be plagued with some sort of algae that is covering everything including a few of the weedy seadragons we saw. But apart from the every present algae the sea was flat and calm and viz. wasn’t too bad.

The day was lots of fun and it was great to enjoy yourself and know that you were doing something good for the environment. I can hope we can get a larger group of people to help us out next year.
