Bubbles from the Abyss

9th march 2007
Dear fellow Diver,

Fishermen in previous elections have made sure that the politicians knew they could vote, but if you think about it, the majority of fishermen are individuals with no organised group. Over the past 12 months or so divers have been threatened with a diving Tax and with an election coming up, I thought you should know where the various parties stand on the tax and on protecting the grey nurse. So I wrote to both leaders.

So far I have not had an answer from labour as I guess they figure fishermen are of more importance, so I would recommend that you all email Morris Lemma at lakemba@parliament.nsw.gov.au and ask him for his thoughts.

This is what the liberals had to say.
"The NSW Liberal/Nationals are opposed to a diving tax in NSW.

The NSW Liberal/Nationals support current grey nurse shark seasonal “critical habitat zonings”, pending a comprehensive scientific and peer-reviewed study."

I would point out that nearly 10,000 divers get this email, so we are a force to be reckoned with. This is the only time in 4 years we get that voice heard, so please speak up and if the politicians won't listen then:

Vote 1 No Diving Tax

Yours in great diving,
Peter Letts

Wreck Diving
The mere thought of diving through a Wreck conjures more thoughts of adventure and mystery than any other type of diving. Some people like it because it is a snap shot of history, others for the marine life it attracts, while some people just like the great photo opportunities they bring. I must say my favorite part of wreck diving is the descent. If the vis is good as you descend, the wreck just appears below you as though sailing on the ocean floor. AWESOME!

Over the next 2 weekends we have a couple of wreck dives coming up for all advanced divers out there. On Sunday the 11th we have a dive out to the wreck of the S.S. Bombo in Wollongong. The S.S. Bombo went down in 1949 off the coast of Wollongong. Although missing at the bottom of the ocean for 30 years, it is now a great dive site. She lays upside down, with her hull broken in half in 30 meters of water, just outside Wollongong harbor. Although the wreck is quite broken up, there is still a lot of it down there with a plethora of marine life calling it home.

On the Sunday after (18th March), we are heading out to the wreck of the Valient at palm beach. This wreck now lies slightly on her port side in 27m of water, over sand. It is because it's over sand and that there is nothing else around, that the Valient has become an artificial reef and attracts huge amounts of fish, such as mackerels, mado’s, bullseyes, lined catfish, golden morays and king fish (to name a few). The wreck is 23m long, 6 m wide with good diving in and around the engine room, cabins and crew quarters.

So if it's wrecks that tickle your fancy, then book in for a dive or two!
