Peter Letts Abyss Scuba Diving www.abyss.com.au This Weekend The weather has been excellent, with great vis and flat seas. This week is as follows: By Peter Meagher It has been a couple of years since I have dived Magic Point and I had forgotten how good a dive it was. There are not many dives in Sydney that give me the same buzz that diving with the Grey Nurse Sharks do. On Sunday 19 November 2006, I had the pleasure of Dive Mastering at Magic Point, we were picked up at the Wharf at Penryhn Street, and it was only a short trip to Magic Point, (south head of Maroubra Beach). The boat dropped anchor right next to the ledge were the grey nurse sharks reside. Thus all that was required was for us to descend to 10 metres from the rear of the boat and swim about 10 metres east and then turn left and descent to 15 metres, and we were there, and so were four magnificent fully grown Grey Nurse sharks. Visibility was excellent at 15 metres plus. Grey Nurse Sharks are majestic to watch and certainly worth checking out. There is no bigger thrill than seeing them in their natural habitat. All divers practiced appropriate Grey Nurse Shark etiquette and gave them some space by not entering the over hang where they reside, On a number of occasions a couple of them appeared to be curious and ventured out some way to pose for photographs and check us out.
Go on treat yourself dive Magic Point, you don't know what you missing out on.

On Saturday the 2nd December we are heading down the coast for a shell harbour day. Shell harbour is about a 1 hour drive south from the shop and we will be running both shore and boat dives on the day. The is limited spots on the boat so if you are keen book ASAP. 8am departure- The boat dive will be planned to check out The Arch. This is a great boat dive, it is a rock formation that is in the shape of an arch that you can swim under. It is Fairly big about 20 meters long, 10 meters wide and three to five meters high. Usually there is heaps of fish schooling around the entrance with stingrays residing in the cave itself. Lots of sponges, gorgonians and sea tulips. For this boat dive you need to be advanced certified. 10am meet- The shore dives will be based around the gutters and the gravel loader. They are both nice easy shore dives that are open to all divers (one again please book). If you are keen why not do the 3 dives! It should be a great day. Bring the family along…
2nd December On the 2nd of December we are planning a twilight dive to Ship Rock. All divers are welcome on this diver it should be a great night. We will be entering the water at 7pm so it will not be totally dark but will be by the time we get out. This will allow us to see both day time and night time marine life. If you do not already know, Ship Rock is a great night dive. It is a marine reserve so there is heaps of life there. The wall just comes alive at night with decorator crabs, pineapple fish and beautiful soft corals. On the safety stop you can check out the sea pens light up like Christmas trees. You can even have a chat to your buddy in the bubble cave. Anyway it should be a fun night. If you are interested you need to book for this dive and be at the shop by 6pm.
P.S. After the dive we usually grab a bit to eat at Cronulla if you are keen.
