Since three of the volcanos which surround Rabaul erupted simultaneously in September 1994, business and airport have been relocated to Kokopo which is 20 km south east of Rabaul.

�

Rabaul's surrounds are as tropically lush and as dramatic as ever. The whole area boasts scenic views and

historical artifacts of WWII . Sitting at the gates to both the Bismarck sea and the Solomon Sea, Rabaul offers a special alternative to the adventurous diver in search of WWII wrecks as well magnificent reef diving.

Take time to visit the famous Japanese Tunnels, hundreds of kilometres were dug during WWII and most still remain today. A visit to the local markets is always a must for visitors where tropical fruits and local artefacts are well displayed.

Comments: Rabaul was the place for wreck diving in PNG and probably the world, before three of the volcanos erupted simultaneously in September 1994. Within three days, the thriving town of Rabaul was covered in ash and completely destroyed. In 2008 I had the chance to go and dive Rabaul and its harbour that once was a volcano while having a smaller one blowing ash in the background every day.
