If you are going to be in Sydney, and plan on taking dive classes, I would like to recommend you try Abyss. My wife and I have wanted an open water PADI certification, and after researching a number of dive shops on the web, decided on Abyss, although it was based on very little knowledge and we were pretty apprehensive about what we would actually find. Selecting something off the web is chancy at best.

I don’t know how we could have been more pleased with our experience. I am a business consultant, and my wife is a trainer and educator. We were both impressed with so much about Peter Letts, his staff, and Abyss.

First of all, I’m used to so many businesses going “cheap” when it comes to the equipment they purchase for use by students. I was so relieved to find that Peter uses only the best, for himself, his staff, and more importantly for us, his students. It was a great opportunity to appreciate the value of using high quality dive gear, and to have confidence I was in the hands of someone who appreciated my safety and well-being enough to not skimp when it came to quality.

Peter was also very accommodating to our needs. My wife and I are both over 40 (for me quite a bit over 40) and diving is an even greater challenge than for someone younger. Peter was patient, encouraging, and always sensitive to what we needed. There was never a feeling of “staying on schedule” to meet his needs. His patience and good humor made the entire experience more enjoyable and pleasant.

Everyone at Abyss went out of their way to be helpful, polite, and warm. I also appreciated all the “wisdom” Peter passed on, not just what was necessary to certify, but what would also help us enjoy our experience more, and not do some of the foolish things I suspect many new divers do, even after certified. And Peter went out of his way to tell us about the history and background of the dive sites, information about the creatures we observed, and other interesting information.

The staff made sure our dives were not just the minimum to certify, but were also exciting experiences in their own right. Each dive was organized to make sure we were seeing the best that Sydney has to offer, which is incredible! It was fascinating to see Rays, Octopus, Cuttlefish, beautiful Blue Groupers, and a great assortment of colorful fish and other sea life.

I thought id write you a quick note regarding my experience with your business in learning how to dive. Sometimes we get so caught up in day-to-day management, we lose focus at the front line of our business – the customer. This letter is to assure you that while you are busy with other matters, your deputies are continuing with the standard of excellence you have created at Abyss.

I had the pleasure of learning to dive with Kellie Oldfield and cannot sing her praises highly enough. As an instructor, she moulded herself to give each of her students what they needed to have the ultimate experience. She would push us where required for each person to take the “leap of faith”, and do something completely against all human instincts. She would be calm and gentle when a concept had not been grasped and more attention was required on a skill or to instill confidence in a hesitant student. And she had an amazing ability to share her passion of the underwater world with all her students and leave them anxiously waiting to share the experience with her. I could not recommend a better person for someone to Scuba Diving Lessons with. It is one skill to transfer knowledge out of a book. It is a completely different skill to be able to share your passion and make it real to your students. Kellie left us foaming at the mouth to see what she shared with us that she’d seen.

Your staff are a true testimony to the continued success of your business. All being divers, they share their passion with all who will listen, and help them explore the endless possibilities of how to enjoy our new found world. The customer service enjoyed at the shop goes beyond normal customer courtesy, it is obvious your team really cares about its customers and the experience they are having.
