For those of you who would like to know more about her, the ships full name is actually the Ex-HMAS Adelaide II, she is 138.1m long with a beam of 14.3m, she was built in USA and was commission by the Royal Australian Navy in November 1980 (the first HMAS Adelaide was a light cruiser that served from 1922 – 1945). As a long-range escort frigate that took part in air defence and anti-submarine warfare amongst other duties, she took part in the 1990/91 Gulf War, peacekeeping in East Timor (another great dive spot!) and spent 3 years in the Arabian Gulf. She was also the frigate that rescued the solo yachtsmen Tony Bullimore and Thierry Dobbois in the 1996/7 Vendee Globe, both men were taken back to Perth on her.

Even after this exciting career she was decommissioned in January 2008 to help offset costs to upgrade other RAN ships. She was demilitarised and gifted to the NSW Government to scuttle off the NSW coast. She has now had her mast removed (this would have been a navigational hazard once sunk), dangerous materials and toxins removed and port holes cut into her to make it more diver friendly, prior to sinking.

Comments: Love this dive! I have done it multiple times and there's still more and more to see. Its great to see the marine life on and around the wreck getting better and better. There's even the occasional grey nurse there now too. COOL!

Comments: I completed the deep diver specialty of my AOW course by diving the Adelaide, it was the first time I had been deeper than 15m and it was fantastic. Cem and the team were awesome support to have while completing the AOW qualification and especially when it came to the first dive on the Adelaide. I thoroughly recommend visiting the Adelaide wreck with the Abyss crew they are a great bunch of guys and girls to go diving with. See you again soon Abyss team!

Comments: I was visiting from the UK and met up with the excellent Abyss Scuba to dive on the HMAS Adelaide. Great dive buddies and really friendly dive skipper Bob. In two dives I managed to cover most of the wreck in excellent visibility. Very exciting. It will be amazing when covered in marine life like the Yongala further north.

Comments: This is one not to be missed. Try it for yourself and you will soon agree. It is a massive wreck with fast growth. Every time I dive it there is more and more life on the wreck. Combine it with a course and make the most of it.

Comments: It's a great dive to keep doing in years to come to see how the "reef" changes over time: more growth, more (and different) fish etc. Must be due for my next trip soon! And unlike the ex-HMAS Brisbane at Mooloolaba, the Adelaide still has its bridge. (Take a spare tank or get a refill and do a lazy out-and-back dive along the wall at Terrigal Haven, too. You'll be well rewarded!)
