Hollis SMS100 Sidemount System

"There are probably a handful of things happening in the dive industry that we could peg as the latest and greatest idea or innovation, but surely the hottest trend right now has to be side mounted diving"Steve Lewis, SDI TDI.

Sidemount diving is simply configuring one or two cylinders on either side of your body, as opposed to backmounting. Tanks can be attached on or near the water, providing much less stress on the body. Regs and gauges are totally independent of each other, creating a fully redundant air supply, with the added advantage that the first stages are within full sight at the diver's side.

It is becoming a commonly held belief in the dive industry that sidemounts will become a more popular way of diving for all divers - from technical to open water - and will gradually replace backmounted twins. There are many advantages including accurate buoyancy control, and a streamlined set up for low lying environments and wreck diving, where the potential for line entanglement is much greater when using a backmounted system.

The innovation and evolution of Sidemount systems in recent years has helped bring sidemount diving into the mainstream. Systems are affordable and comfortable to wear, with many of the comforts of a traditional BCD. Sidemount instruction is now also becoming more accessible and easier to do.

Jeff Loflin, without doubt the most predominant Sidemount instructor in the world today has said, 'I have taught around 400 Instructors to Sidemount their gear, all of whom originally used back mounts, and to date have not had one diver go back to back mounting their cylinders'

Comments: I have dived my Hollis SMS100 on 160+ sidemount dives including 40+ technical dives. It is a very sturdy and robust BCD, built to a high standard. It is easily customised and I love the redundancy of dual bladders. It works really well in the sidemount configuration with 1, 2, 3 or 4 cylinders! I recommend the SMS100 for a diver considering sidemount diving, especially in the technial arena!!!

Comments: It has been my 3rd BCD. Dive with it for 3 years or more. It took me a few dives to get trim and weight right. Now I find it snug and cozy, great to hover in mid water, easy to trim (on dive). Love it.

Comments: Got the SMS 100 as my first BCD and haven't regretted my choice. Having never owned another BC I can't compare it to anything but I am really enjoying the versatility the SMS 100 provides.

"The SMS100 BC is not just for sidemount"

Comments: The SMS100 BC is not just for sidemount and is a great BC that will serve you from novice to more advanced diving. It's such a pity that I didn't use this BC more before I bought my Excursion2, I just did 8 days in Vanuatu diving the Coolidge and this was the BC that I took and used, effortless trim setup whether I used sidemount twins or just a single sling tank. This BC will also handle a back mounted single by just using a pair of cam bands, I am currently debating whether or not to get rid o... More details

Comments: Knowing that I can dive backmounted singles, twins and sidemount, my only regret is that I bought my SMS 100 having my bought a more traditional recreational BCD. Suffice to say I haven't dived my Excursion 2 since the day my SMS100 arrived. I love how comfortable it is, whether it's 4 cylinder technical dives in tropical water - to twin 7 litre cylinders in a cold water recreational dive, the ease at which the rig trims level makes it great for people starting out with their first BCD to experi... More details

"Best BCD I have ever worn"

Comments: I have dived many BCD's and this one provides the best positioning for trim and streamlining. It can be bungeed for reduction in size and can be used for single tanks, twins and sidemount - so versatile! Buy it as a first BCD and you will never need another!
