The whales begin appearing with their young in June, when they begin to train the next generation of calves how to survive the long trip home to Antarctica, later in the year. The local skippers use radio to alert our boat when a relaxed whale is in the area, and the boat gently

During this process the calves are at their calmest and most inquisitive, and swimmers are able to slip into the water next to the whales and observe and interact with them. Mothers are known to ‘present’ their young to swimmers, to gently push them towards the swimmers for approval!

And for experienced divers, beautiful coral reefs stretch over fifty different dive spots with many more still undiscovered. The dive sites are varied with caves, tunnels, walls, brightly coloured fans and coral formations. The visibility is between 25 - 40 meters and the water temperature is between 24 - 28c. Whalesong and sightings are regularly reported during SCUBA dives.

Comments: In summary the Tonga trip arranged through Abyss was one of the best dive trip/holidays I’ve ever been on. We went as a party of 10 people and literally had a ‘Whale’ of a time (pardon the pun). I would rate the hospitality 10/10, Organisation 10/10 and Diving, well simply unforgettable. It was so much fun I don’t really know where to start… I guess I can remember being on the surface at the start of one dive and seeing the ocean floor below. Comments: You won't be disappointed by Tonga. The whales were spectacular OF COURSE, but by far my favourite dives were the mystery of the underwater caverns and the huge bubble cave where the tiny baby sharks reside and grow.....a must see. Don't forget your camera on this one! Oh and did I mention the restaurants?.........go on try them. Margaret "Bubbles" Goodman
