Seadragon Project

After a club night and the presentation from Craig from Dragon Search it was decided that Abyss Scuba Diving would help obtain data on the of the Weedy Seadragons and other marine life in the Botany Bay area and help Dragon Search by supply this on going data from the same areas.

On Sunday (29th April) was our first day or the Seadragon Project and we saw 18 divers from Abyss Scuba Diving start on the Weedy Seadragon Monitoring program.

The weather was very kind to us and even though rain was forecast the weather remained sunny for the entire day and viz. was reported as being “excellent”. The Dragon search teams broke into three groups for the counting to make sure they could cover different areas of the dive site and to make sure we could achieve a realistic count with regards to seadragon numbers. Apart from Weedys, a number of other interesting marine life was spotted including a Port Jackson shark, seahorses and quite a few giant cuttlefish & octopus.

Our first team of dragon counters

In between dives the dive shop provided drinks and a BBQ to all the divers who participated. A big thanks to Lawson for doing the cooking and to Jeremy for helping him out. Thank you to all the divers who helped out, Nancy Coster, John Parker, Lynda Brenock, Trish O’shea, Blake Trudgeon, Bob Trudgeon, Greg Marshall, Johnson Siu, learnne Hui, Anna Mascarello, Robyn McBride, Peter McBride, Natasha Young, Gavin Young, Rob Kaszonyi, Carl Fallon, Rachael Letts & Lisa Ovies.

Those that could not dive on the day helped feed the divers

Our next Weedy Seadragon Monitoring day is on Sunday 27th May. Abyss Scuba Diving offers half price hire gear to anyone who comes along to help out with this worthwhile project. A lot more divers are needed for the search to be entirely accurate. So please mark down this day in your calendar and next month PLEASE come and help us gather this vital information on the Weedy Seadragon populations.

Trish the seahorse is related to but it is not a seadragon.

Nancy & John.
