Dive Site: Gordons Bay

Gordons Bay

General description
A simple dive site, Gordon’s Bay popular for city dive schools due to its ‘confined water’ like conditions and textbook maximum depth of 12 metres. To ensure divers don’t get lost, a chain had been laid down, although much of it has been covered in sand.

Getting there
Drive down Clovelly Road and enter the car park at the south end, near the Clovelly Surf Club

Entry and exit
Walk down towards the south eastern side of the car park and along the rock platform until you reach the end. Here perform a belly flop entry. Gordons Bay is also Sydney’s only dive site for handicapped divers, in the form of a wheelchair ramp.

The Dives
Attempt to find the remnants of the submerged chain by swimming southwest in to the 8 metre mark with a large rock ledge to the immediate west. Swing to the south east until you ascend to 6 metres, then head east past the kelp (to the south), until you arrive at a massive stand of kelp encircling some large boulders. At his point, head due north back towards the car park until you reach another stand of kelp (in about 4 metres) and follow the line of boulders west. You will return to the start.

Things you can see.
Commonly seen Giant cuttlefish, yellowtail barracuda, blue grouper, Port Jackson shark, octopus, bullseyes, leather jacket, and wrasse.

Things to be careful of. A relatively low risk dive site, however beginner divers should bare in mind the chain circuit is no longer whole, so it may be possible to get lost. Go Back
