A Career in Diving / From those who live in the Abyss

Melissa Wylie PADI Staff Instructor

Melissa Wylie (Mel) began diving when she was 8 years old with father in their backyard swimming pool. Mel started off doing the Bubble Maker course as well as the Seal Team course. Mel instantly fell in love with the sport became hooked. When she turned 10 Melissa did her junior Open Water Course and did her first ever ocean dive at Shelly Beach in Manly.

At 16 Mel did my Advanced Open Water course on The Spirit Of Freedom in Cairns on the Coral Sea which was by far the best diving she had ever encountered.  Her family dived with Minkie Whales, Sharks, Turtles, Sea snakes, giant Cod, and were able to experience some of the most amazing diving offered by the Great Barrier Reef. Specifically on that trip she fell in love with Drift diving, and still remains her favourite type of diving today.

Mel first encountered Abyss Scuba Diving when she was 18. Mel had enrolled in a Rescue Diver course and this specific course got her really thinking about making diving a bit more than just a ‘hobby’. Every weekend she was at Abyss joining the Shore Dives, and before she knew it Mel was enrolled in my Dive Master Course.

Mel Teaching in Thialand

Mel became a Dive Master at 19 and got a job offer over in Thailand, Koh Tao. Mel moved there for a year where she worked at Crystal Dive Resort where she eventually did my IDC instructor training as well as her MSDT instructor training as well.

Mel moved back to Australia in November 2012 and have now completed my Staff Instructor training with Carl Fallon and have begun working full time with Abyss.
