Tufi Resort in Papua New Guinea

A couple of days a Christmas a group of very excited divers set off for Tufi Resort in Papua New Guinea. A couple of meeting drinks before boarding and we were on our way to Port Moresby where we caught our connecting flight to Tufi. We arrived late afternoon, and after settling in to our rooms it was to the bar for a few drinks and then dinner.

An early start the following morning, breakfast and then down the hill to the dive centre to set up our dive gear. Wasn`t long and we were on the boats and heading out for our first day of diving. We were greeted with amazing conditions, great visibility and 29 degree water…oh yeah!!! The tropical conditions had everybody excited, an abundance of marine life was seen at all the dive sites with the highlight the sighting of big Hammerheads. Unfortunately not everyone got to see them, I was one of the lucky ones. We also had a few dives off the wharf at the dive centre including a night dive. A favourite with the photographers were the Mandarin fish although this guy below didn`t want to be left out.

We had our New Years Eve party with a flouro theme. A fun night was had by all with the belly flop competition between Kane and Rach creating plenty of laughs. For all of Rachs` efforts she just couldn`t match it with Kane, who managed to dispossess himself of his shorts along the way…not a very pretty sight. The following afternoon we attended the villages New Years celebration with 4 other clans joining in. On a very hot afternoon we watched the men and women in their tribal outfits dancing and singing. The headdresses the men wear are amazing, so colourful and use only the feathers from native birds.

Our 2nd last day we were treated to a cultural tour starting with a ride in an outrigger dugout canoe, followed by demonstrations of face tattooing, bread making and fire starting. We were lucky enough to have members of the local tribe performing in their tribal dress again…very very cool!!! We left there and after a short boat ride we arrived at a fantastic beach for lunch. What a great afternoon!!! Great weather and a great group of people, we played cricket, snorkelled, chatted and had a few drinks while wasting the afternoon away.

The next morning had us boarding for our return flights back home. Back in Sydney we all parted ways signalling the end to an amazing trip.
