Traveling overseas is always a thrill! The sights, sounds, and smells when you first step off the plane make a lasting impression. Over New Years a lucky group of Abyss divers headed over to Tawali, PNG to dive Milne Bay, enjoy the resort and views, and bring in 2018!
After a flight, forest and boat drive, we arrived at a stunning reef and could see the resort lights and the smell of dinner being prepared from the resort nestled in the hills over-looking the bay. We were immediately greeted with a welcome drink, our bags were taken directly to our rooms. We were very spoilt with delicious food freshly prepared for each meal including freshly baked cookies and brewed coffee in between dives.
Milne Bay is a top destination for any diver, with warm, calm, clear tropical waters, beautiful healthy coral, with a huge variety of fish life. The drive out to the dive sites were littered with dolphins, whales, and even breaching Manta Rays. Under the water there’s big schools of fish, big and small, schools of rays, a million types of colourful nudibranchs, anemone fish, pygmy seahorses, pipefish the size of a single strand of hair, rhinopias, mantas shrimp, mandarin fish, and even some whale sharks swam by to check us out! Whether we were scouring the surfaces for little macro wonders or floating along on a drift dive check out the amazing seascapes and big fish life, there was never a dull minute or a want to end the dive – even our Divemasters enjoyed exploring for as long as our air let us (often 80 or 90+ mins for us Sidemount divers 😛 ).
After 4 days and 16 dives later, it was time to hang our dive gear out to dry, pop on our fluro attire in preparation for the evening festivities. We were treated to a traditional New Year’s dance by local village children and a scrumptious BBQ feast out under the clear PNG skies. With lots of pool toys, great personalities, and a poolside bar, fireworks, flares, splashes, songs and laughs all around and the New Year was counted in and naught to be forgotten with an incredible group of the Abyss family.
After 4 New Years’ spent with the Abyss crew overseas – I keep coming back for another great start to another great year. =)
