Swimming with the Australian fur seals at Martin Island, located near Wollongong, is an incredible experience that draws many visitors to the area. The island is just a short 10-minute boat ride from the Port Kembla Boat Ramp, making it easily accessible for those interested in swimming with these amazing creatures.

The island is home to a colony of 40-70 Australian fur seals, primarily consisting of a bachelor group of males who take on the role of mentors for juvenile seals. Visitors can observe their interactions and learn about the social behavior of these animals.

Swimming with the seals in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience. The fur seals are playful and curious, and may approach visitors to investigate them. It's important to remember that while these animals are friendly, they are still wild and should be treated with respect and caution.

One fascinating aspect of swimming with the fur seals at Martin Island is observing their behaviour both in and out of the water. Visitors can see the seals using their back flippers separately to walk slowly on land, and can also observe them swimming and playing in the water. It's also interesting to note that a dry seal looks quite different from a seal in the water, allowing visitors to see the variation in their appearance.
