Diving the wreck of the SS Macleay at Nelson Bay is an amazing experience. Located off Little Island, the Macleay lies in 42.7 metres of water and is a popular dive site for experienced divers. The ship was built in 1883 and departed Newcastle with a main cargo of coal on October 11th 1911, destined for the Clarence River with a crew of 17 people and three horses. Sadly, it never made it to its destination and crashed into rocks off Little Island with only two survivors. Visibility is typically medium (5-10m) making this an exciting dive for those who are certified to do so.
