What is a scuba diving certificate?
A scuba diving certificate is a recognised training credential showing that you have completed the knowledge, confined-water skills and open-water dives required for a particular level of recreational scuba diving.
For most beginners, that first qualification is the PADI Open Water Diver certification. Once you successfully complete it, you can dive with a certified buddy to a maximum depth of 18 metres, within the conditions and experience for which you were trained.

What does a PADI Open Water certificate let you do?
Your PADI Open Water certification gives dive centres a recognised record of the level you have completed. As an adult Open Water Diver, it generally allows you to:
- Dive with another certified diver rather than under direct instructor supervision.
- Dive to a maximum depth of 18 metres, within your training and experience.
- Book suitable recreational dives and hire scuba equipment from dive operators worldwide.
- Continue into guided diving, the PADI Advanced Open Water course and other specialty training.

How Open Water diver training works
Abyss combines flexible PADI eLearning with two practical training days in Sydney. Each stage prepares you for the next, so you build knowledge and water confidence before completing the qualification.
Confined-water skills
Learn to assemble and use your equipment, clear a mask, recover a regulator, control buoyancy and respond to common problems in a controlled pool environment.
Four ocean dives
Apply the skills in real Sydney conditions over four open-water dives. After meeting the course performance requirements, you earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification.

Before you enrol
PADI certification requirements in Sydney
Experience and water skills
- No previous scuba diving experience is required.
- You need basic water comfort and must complete a 200-metre swim.
- You must float or tread water for 10 minutes.
- You must complete the PADI eLearning before the in-water training days.
Age and medical requirements
- Abyss standard group courses are for divers aged 13 and over.
- Children aged 10–12 train through a private Junior Open Water course.
- Every student completes a dive medical questionnaire.
- Doctor clearance is required only when questionnaire answers indicate it is needed.
Junior diver depth and supervision limits differ by age. Course participation also depends on physical and emotional readiness and the ability to use the required equipment safely.

Does a PADI scuba certificate expire?
No. A PADI certification has no expiry date. However, skills and confidence can fade. If you have not dived for a while, a refresher is a sensible way to return safely and comfortably.
How deep can a PADI Open Water Diver go?
The maximum depth for a certified adult PADI Open Water Diver is 18 metres. Junior divers have age-based depth and supervision restrictions.
Can I use my PADI certification overseas?
Yes. PADI certification is recognised by dive centres around the world. An operator may still check your recent experience and require a refresher or guide for challenging conditions.
Do I need to buy scuba gear before the course?
No. Abyss includes all required scuba equipment for the Open Water course. Once certified, you can decide which personal-fit items to buy as you learn what is comfortable for you.
