Gear for safer, more confident diving

Rescue Is a Smart Time to Check Your Gear Setup

Rescue Diver is often the point where divers start thinking differently. You are no longer just looking after yourself — you are learning to notice stress, support your buddy and respond calmly when something changes.

Hiring gear is still perfectly fine if you are not ready to buy. But if you are becoming a more regular local diver, familiar gear can make Rescue skills easier because you already know your computer, BCD fit, regulator feel, pocket layout and safety equipment.

You do not need to buy a full kit just because you are doing Rescue. The goal is to work out what is worth owning now, what can wait, and what will genuinely help your Sydney diving.

Training Environment & Safety Systems

Our Rescue course pushes you just enough – never beyond what’s safe. Here’s how we keep it professional and fun.

Controlled, progressive scenarios

  • Briefings outline roles, signals and boundaries before each session
  • We build from simple skills to complex rescues at your pace
  • Debriefs and feedback after every exercise cement the learning

Safety equipment & support

  • Oxygen kit, first aid and emergency gear on site
  • Student Dive Injury & Evacuation Insurance is included
  • Small groups so instructors can focus on you

Why Rescue Is the Most Rewarding Course You’ll Do

Rescue transforms how you dive. You stop just following – you start noticing, anticipating and helping others. Divers who take this course say it’s the one that changes everything.

  • Confidence: know exactly what to do if something goes wrong
  • Better buddy: spot stress early and prevent problems
  • Fun & camaraderie: intense scenarios but loads of laughter and new friends

Gear hire or ownership?

Hiring is fine – but Rescue is a good time to ask what is worth owning

If you are not ready to buy gear, hire it and focus on the course. That is the right decision for many divers. But if you are doing Rescue because you are becoming a more regular and responsible local diver, familiar equipment can make training easier.

  • Own first: personal-fit gear, dive computer, SMB, whistle, compass, cutting tool and practical Sydney safety gear.
  • Compare next: regulator and BCD once you are diving regularly enough for familiarity to matter.
  • Do not rush: we would rather help you buy the right gear at the right time than push a full kit too early.

How the Course Works

  • Complete the PADI eLearning online at your own pace
  • Day 1: Confined-water sessions focused on self-rescue skills, recognising and managing stress in other divers, and practising rescue equipment use
  • Day 2: Open-water sessions with realistic rescue scenarios – including rescuing panicked and unresponsive divers, search patterns and emergency management
  • Earn your Rescue Diver certification – the stepping stone toward Divemaster and professional levels

Course Preparation

  • Complete the PADI medical questionnaire and ensure you meet the medical requirements
  • Finish your Rescue eLearning before your training weekend
  • Organise your own gear or hire equipment before the course

Important Conditions

  • Advanced Open Water certification, PADI, SSI, RAID, SDI, ISC or equivalent
  • Current first aid and CPR training within the last 24 months; ask about our Emergency First Response courses if you need to update your certification

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about the PADI Rescue Diver course in Sydney? Here are the ones we’re asked most often.

How many dives do you need for a PADI Rescue Diver?

The Rescue Diver course runs over two days with multiple in-water sessions and realistic scenarios. You’ll complete several skill sessions and at least two open-water dives while practising real-world rescue techniques.

Is the PADI Rescue Diver course hard?

Rescue is challenging but highly rewarding. It focuses on problem-solving, situational awareness and teamwork. Many divers say it’s the most fun and confidence-building course they’ve ever taken.

Does the PADI Rescue Diver certification expire?

No. Your certification never expires. We do recommend refreshing your rescue skills periodically and staying active through regular diving or continuing education.

How long does the Rescue Diver course take?

About two days of practical training, plus the online eLearning beforehand. The schedule combines self-study with a weekend of in-water sessions.

How do you become a PADI Rescue Diver?

You must be at least 12 years old, hold an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent, and have current CPR and First Aid training. After meeting prerequisites, complete the eLearning and attend the confined-water and open-water rescue sessions.

What will I learn in the Rescue Diver course?

You’ll develop self-rescue skills, learn to recognise and manage stress in other divers, practise emergency management, equipment use, rescuing panicked and unresponsive divers, search patterns and realistic rescue scenarios.

Do I need my own gear?

You need your own complete scuba kit or hired gear for both days, including a tank. If you do not own your own gear, please book gear hire when enrolling. If you are starting to dive regularly, Rescue is also a good time to ask Abyss what gear is worth owning first and what can wait.

Should I buy gear before Rescue?

You do not need to buy a full gear package before Rescue. Hiring is still sensible if you are not ready. Useful ownership steps at this stage often include a dive computer, SMB, whistle, compass, cutting tool and personal-fit gear such as mask, fins, boots, gloves and exposure protection. If you are unsure, ask an Abyss instructor before you buy.

Do rescue divers get paid?

The Rescue Diver certification is recreational. It is an important step toward professional diving, but only Divemasters and Instructors are paid to supervise dives or teach.

Still unsure if Rescue is right for you? Get in touch with our team – we’ll help you figure out if it’s your next step.
