Your questions, answered

Everything you need to prepare for your first course.

How do I prepare for my course?

After your booking is processed, we send your course details and access to the PADI online learning included in your package. Before your first practical day:

  • Complete your online learning. Allow 10–12 hours and finish it before your practical training.
  • Complete your medical questionnaire early. If doctor clearance is required, arrange it and provide it by the deadline in your course information.
  • Check your course confirmation. Keep both practical days free, normally 7:45 am to around 5 pm, and check the meeting and preparation instructions.

Before booking, make sure you meet the swimming requirements. See what to bring and where to meet.

Do I need experience, and how well must I swim?

No scuba experience is needed. You must be comfortable in the water and complete a 200 m swim and a 10-minute float or tread-water check. If you are unsure about either, practise in a pool and call us before booking to discuss your water confidence.

Will I need a dive medical?

Everyone completes a dive medical questionnaire before training. If your answers require doctor clearance, you must arrange it and provide it by the deadline in your course information. You cannot join the in-water training without required clearance. Any doctor’s fee is separate from the course price.

Check this early, especially before a last-minute booking. Call us on 02 9583 9662 if you need help understanding the process.

What is the minimum age?

Our standard group courses are for ages 13 and over. For ages 10–12, contact us about a private kids course. Younger students receive the appropriate Junior qualification, with its supervision and depth limits; contact us to discuss the right course for your child.

How much time do I need, and what happens each day?

Allow 10–12 hours of PADI eLearning beforehand, then two consecutive practical days, normally 7:45 am to around 5 pm each day. Keep both days free: finish times depend on conditions and student progress.

Day one normally combines pool training and the first ocean dive. Day two covers the remaining three ocean dives. The sequence may change with conditions. Certification depends on completing all required learning and skills; additional training may be needed.

After your booking is processed, we send your eLearning access and course details. Complete the online learning and medical requirements by the stated deadlines. If you cannot, contact us before your course; postponement or additional training fees may apply under the course terms.

Where do we meet, and do I need a car?

Meet at Abyss Scuba Diving, 278 Rocky Point Road, Ramsgate NSW 2217. Transport from Abyss to the training sites is included. If you travel by train, arrange a 7:30 am pickup from Kogarah Station with us in advance. Home pickup is not included.

Check your course confirmation for the exact meeting instructions. Directions, parking and transport information.

What does the complete course price cover?

Your package covers PADI eLearning, pool training, four ocean training dives, all required course scuba equipment, transport from Abyss to the sites, certification on successful completion, and student dive injury and evacuation insurance during instructor-supervised training, subject to policy sub-limits and excess.

The standard package is A$699 per person. Some high-demand dates are A$799. Selected available courses starting within seven days may be A$599; the calendar shows each date’s complete price. Any required doctor’s fee and applicable transfer, postponement or additional-training fees are separate. Read about course changes.

What if I feel nervous about my first dive?

Tell your instructor what is on your mind. You begin in the pool, practising breathing underwater, using the equipment and the essential skills before your ocean training. With no more than four students per instructor, you have personal guidance as you practise.

For a particular concern about breathing, mask skills or staying calm, talk it through with us before booking.

What should I bring, and when can I fly afterwards?

Bring swimwear, a towel, water, lunch or snacks, warm clothes and any required medical clearance. All required scuba equipment for your course is provided.

Allow at least 18 hours after your last dive before flying. Plan flights around the actual finish of your diving, and follow any longer interval advised for your circumstances.

What happens if sea conditions are unsuitable?

Ocean sites and the training sequence depend on conditions. If conditions are unsuitable, we will explain the rescheduling or completion options. Read the course terms for changes or cancellations; your Australian Consumer Law rights continue to apply.

Can I cancel or change my course dates?

Read the published course cancellation and transfer terms before payment. They set out:

  • 7 days or more before starting: no transfer fee. Cancellation refunds may exclude supplied learning materials that Abyss cannot reasonably recover.
  • More than 24 hours but less than 7 days: transfer fees of up to A$100.
  • 24 hours or less: transfer fees of up to A$200.

These transfer charges are limited to reasonable additional costs, disclosed before confirmation, and subject to availability. Later cancellations, missed training and incomplete courses are assessed under the full terms. If you cannot finish preparation or obtain required medical clearance, contact us promptly to confirm your options and any fee. Australian Consumer Law rights remain unaffected.
