“I had the pleasure of completing my PADI Freediving Course with Abyss Diving. Our instructor Rachael provided us with an amazing experience that led to me exceeding my own expectations. Rachael used her experience to help us feel calm and at ease in the water, which was exactly what was needed in order to achieve the course benchmarks and end the weekend as a certified freediver. I very much look forward to diving with the Abyss team again and would strongly recommend them to anyone who is looking to spend some wonderful time underwater.”

Henry Zhang – PADI Freediving Instructor Sydney

Henry Zhang is a PADI Freediving Instructor known for his calm, encouraging teaching style. Since 2020 he’s guided hundreds of new freedivers to find confidence beneath the surface — combining safety, mindfulness and fun.

Henry believes freediving isn’t just about depth — it’s about discovering focus and freedom in every breath. Learn from someone who lives that philosophy on every dive.

Why Take a Freediving Course?

Freediving isn’t just a sport — it’s a powerful way to reconnect with your body, your breath, and the ocean. By learning to dive on a single breath, you’ll unlock a sense of inner calm, focus, and freedom that’s unlike anything else. Whether you're gliding effortlessly through kelp forests, exploring Sydney’s stunning underwater rock formations, or simply challenging your personal limits, freediving builds confidence, improves lung function, and reduces stress.

Plus, it’s one of the most sustainable and accessible ways to explore the sea. With no heavy tanks or bubbles, you’ll move silently and gracefully alongside marine life — experiencing the ocean as few others do. And with Sydney’s world-class dive sites just minutes away, there’s no better place to begin your journey beneath the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is freediving, and how is it different from scuba diving?

Freediving is exploring underwater on a single breath, without scuba tanks or heavy gear. It’s a calmer, more meditative way to dive that focuses on breath-hold, body control, and minimal equipment.

Can beginners learn to freedive in Sydney?

Yes — our freediving courses are designed specifically for beginners. You’ll learn in the pool first, then apply your skills at local Sydney dive sites, all under expert supervision. Sydney has a very active freediving community.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to start freediving?

No, you just need to be comfortable in the water and able to swim 200 metres. Freediving is more about relaxation and breath control than swimming strength.

Is freediving safe for beginners?

Yes, freediving is very safe when done with proper freediving safety training and a buddy. Our freediving courses teach freediving safety skills, dive safety protocols, relaxation techniques, and everything you need to dive responsibly.

How long does the Freediving course take?

The freediving course runs over two days — usually one pool training day and one open water day. It's a fast and fun way to get certified in just a single weekend.

What are the requirements to start a freediving course?

You need to be at least 12 years old, healthy, and able to swim 200 metres. No previous diving experience is required — just a curiosity for the underwater world.

What gear do I need for a freediving course?

You’ll need a low-volume mask, snorkel, wetsuit, long fins, and a weight belt.
We’ll supply you with a complimentary set of long freediving fins and provide the use of weights and a weight belt during your training.
If you don’t already have your own mask, snorkel, or wetsuit, we can rent them to you or help you choose the perfect fit from our range of freediving gear in-store.

Where are the best freediving sites in Sydney?

Sydney offers amazing freediving at spots like Magic Point, Bare Island, and Kurnell. These sites provide calm conditions and excellent visibility — perfect for training and exploration.

How long can most people hold their breath when freediving?

Most beginners reach 1–2 minutes of breath-hold by the end of their freediving course. With training, you can build up to 2–3 minutes in a relaxed, safe environment.

Will freediving make me a better scuba diver?

Yes — freediving improves breath control, relaxation, and confidence underwater. Many scuba divers find they use air more efficiently and feel more comfortable after freediving training.
