Driving force behind the freediving program at Abyss

Henry Zhang leads the freediving program at Abyss Scuba Diving, bringing passion, precision and purpose to every course. A certified PADI Freediving, Scuba, and Mermaid Instructor teaching since 2020, Henry is known for calm, patient coaching that helps students find confidence from their very first breath-hold.

He believes each discipline holds a unique meaning: scuba is a way to explore the world, freediving is a way to explore the mind, and mermaiding is a way to blend into the ocean. With Henry, training goes beyond skills—it's about wonder, connection and respect for the sea.

Teaching Philosophy

Henry’s courses are structured, supportive and safety-first. Small groups (max 4 per instructor) ensure personalised feedback on breathing, equalisation and technique—so you progress at your pace. He blends mindfulness with method, helping divers relax into depth rather than push for numbers.

Experience & Conservation

  • Marine advocacy: Volunteered with the China Green Development Foundation; raised public awareness around animal welfare and ethical marine tourism.
  • Research & fieldwork: Caretaker for the endangered Yangtze finless porpoise; coral research with the CAS Deep-Sea Institute; grassroots science education.
  • Film & media: Stunt double and diving consultant for Lost in the Stars (消失的她).
  • Project AWARE: Coral, Shark & Marine Debris Specialist Instructor—integrating ocean stewardship into every class.
