Sydney offers a wide range of top-rated dive sites. Certified divers can explore Magic Point (home to wobbegong sharks), Bare Island (great for macro life), Oak Park (with gropers and Port Jackson sharks), The Leap to Steps drift dive (Kurnell), and Shelly Beach (marine reserve). Check our Sydney Dive Calendar for live listings.
Boat dives give access to deeper offshore sites like Magic Point and Cape Banks. They include easier gear handling onboard and cost $120–$160 per dive. Shore dives, like those at Bare Island or Oak Park, are free to join with Abyss (most other shops charge a fee) and are ideal for macro life and relaxed diving.
Divers frequently spot weedy sea dragons (Kurnell), wobbegong sharks (Magic Point), blue gropers, Port Jackson sharks, giant cuttlefish, rays, octopus, and seals (Martin Island, seasonal). Check our Sydney Dive Calendar to match dives to seasonal marine highlights.
May to October offers the best visibility (10–25m), calm conditions, and the highest chance of seeing sea dragons, cuttlefish, and Port Jackson sharks. December to March has warmer water (21–24°C) and great social diving, though visibility may drop slightly. Seal dives are best from June to September. Check current conditions on the Sydney Dive Calendar.
Dive insurance is not legally required but strongly recommended. It may cover hyperbaric chamber treatment, emergency evacuation, gear damage or loss, and missed dives. Top providers include DAN (Divers Alert Network), DiveAssure, and World Nomads.
Sydney accepts all major internationally recognised certifications including PADI, SSI, NAUI, CMAS, RAID, and BSAC. Open Water certification is suitable for most local dives, while Advanced Open Water is recommended for deep or drift dives. Bring either a physical or digital eCard to join dives.
Yes — if it’s been 6–12 months, we recommend a refresher dive. For over 12 months, the PADI ReActivate program is ideal and includes theory review plus a pool or ocean session. Book a guided refresher or learn more about ReActivate.
Yes — Abyss offers guided shore dives every weekend (free to join) and weekly boat dives. Other options include drift dives, seal dives (June–September), and occasional night dives. All include briefings, navigation help, and marine life spotting. View upcoming options on the Sydney Dive Calendar.
Sydney’s temperate waters and rocky shorelines call for specific gear. Most divers wear:
- 5mm or 7mm full wetsuit depending on the season
- Neoprene hood (especially May–Sept)
- Booties with open-heel fins
- Gloves for shore entry protection
- Snorkel for surface swims in swell
