IDC Candidate Requirements
This course is for divers who are already at professional level and ready for instructor development. Contact Abyss before booking if you are unsure whether your qualifications meet the requirements.
Professional Rating
You should be a PADI Divemaster, PADI Assistant Instructor or hold an equivalent qualifying leadership-level rating.
Certified Diver for 6+ Months
You must have been a certified diver for at least six months before enrolling in the IDC.
Logged Dives
You need at least 60 logged dives to start the IDC and 100 logged dives to attend the Instructor Examination.
EFR / CPR and First Aid
You need Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care, or qualifying CPR and First Aid training, completed within the past 24 months.
EFR Instructor
EFR Instructor is required for PADI Instructor certification and can be completed during your instructor training pathway.
Medical and Equipment
You need a physician-signed medical statement within the past 12 months and standard scuba equipment, including audible and visual signalling devices.

What’s Not Included
The IDC gives you professional-level instructor training, but several external costs and requirements must be budgeted separately.
PADI Application Fees
PADI Instructor application fees are paid directly to PADI after successful completion of the Instructor Examination.
PADI Instructor Examination Fees
IE fees are charged separately by PADI and are not included in the Abyss course price unless specifically stated.
Professional Liability Insurance
Required if you plan to work as a dive instructor and arranged separately.
Dive Medical
A current dive medical or physician-signed medical statement within the past 12 months is required at your own expense.
Required Materials
The official PADI IDC Crew Pack and required instructor materials are mandatory and may need to be purchased separately.
Personal Dive Equipment
Candidates are expected to provide their own full set of dive gear, including signalling and safety equipment.

Emergency First Response Instructor
One requirement for becoming a PADI Instructor is the Emergency First Response Instructor rating. This training is normally completed during the IDC pathway before your final Instructor Examination.
Master Scuba Diver Trainer Prep
MSDT Prep is an optional next step after the IDC. It helps new instructors add specialty instructor ratings, broaden what they can teach and work toward Master Scuba Diver Trainer requirements.

No. This page is for the standard PADI IDC pathway. The Dive Instructor Internship includes IDC preparation plus additional real teaching experience, student certifications, shop experience, business workshops and career support.

Choose the standard IDC if you are already a confident Divemaster, meet the prerequisites and want the focused pathway to prepare for PADI Instructor certification.
Who should choose the Instructor Internship?

How long does the IDC take?
The Abyss IDC is structured so candidates can complete the key in-person training in approximately one week, with online preparation before the main program.
