Check the foundations

Entry requirements

You do not need 100 dives when you first enquire. You do need a realistic plan to meet every requirement at the correct stage.

Before the IDC

Professional entry

  • PADI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor or a qualifying leadership-level certification
  • At least 18 years old
  • Certified as a diver for at least six months
  • At least 60 logged dives
  • Qualifying CPR and first aid completed within the previous 24 months
  • Physician-signed medical completed within the previous 12 months
Before the IE

Examination readiness

  • At least 100 logged dives
  • Successful completion of the IDC requirements
  • Current medical and qualifying first-aid documentation
  • Required knowledge, water skills, rescue readiness and teaching performance
  • EFR Instructor completed before PADI Instructor certification if not already held
Bring and plan

Professional preparation

  • Full personal dive and safety equipment
  • Certification records and an accurate logbook
  • Enough time for online preparation and the full Sydney timetable
  • Accommodation, insurance, travel and living-cost budget
  • Appropriate visa and work rights where relevant

Review the current PADI Instructor requirements. Abyss will make the program-fit decision against your records and the standards current at enrolment.

Training, examination, experience

Your pathway through the IDC, IE and beyond

These are distinct stages. Completing the IDC does not itself make you an Instructor, and attending the program does not guarantee an IE pass.

  1. 01

    Eligibility and preparation

Your Advisor checks your rating, six-month certification history, logged dives, first aid, medical, equipment and dates. You complete eLearning, theory review and any required dive development.

  2. 02

    Instructor Development Course

Train in PADI standards, knowledge development, confined-water and open-water teaching, skill demonstration, rescue readiness, EFR Instructor and professional judgement.

  3. 03

    PADI Instructor Examination

A PADI examiner conducts the standardised IE. You must meet the current performance requirements and complete the PADI application process to earn the OWSI rating.

  4. 04

    Post-qualification teaching

Once your Instructor status is active, you begin the mentored student-teaching phase—observing, assisting, co-teaching and taking increasing responsibility as your readiness develops.

  5. 05

    MSDT phase, if selected

Complete the included Specialty Instructor training and applications. MSDT is awarded only after you hold five qualifying Specialty Instructor ratings, have issued at least 25 qualifying PADI certifications and PADI approves the application.

Confidence comes after the exam

Teaching and mentoring experience

A standard IDC prepares you for assessment. The internship continues into the part new Instructors often find hardest: teaching real people with different confidence levels, learning styles and needs.

Observe and assist

See how experienced Abyss Instructors brief, demonstrate, manage time and respond to student stress.

Team teach

Take appropriate course components while a mentor remains closely involved.

Build responsibility

Lead more of the learning journey as your judgement, control and standards knowledge become consistent.

Receive feedback

Review what worked, what needs adjustment and how to become clearer, safer and more useful to a dive operation.

Before you pay

Your written plan will confirm which amounts are paid or processed by Abyss, the fee schedule then current, the exact inclusions and exclusions, and what happens if PADI changes a fee. IE resits, repeat training, replacement materials, annual renewals and costs created by missing prerequisites are not included unless your written confirmation says otherwise.

One number that needs explaining

What “25 student certifications” means

It is practical teaching experience after qualification—not 25 courses, 25 qualifications awarded to you or 25 days of watching from the side.

What it means

  • Experience connected with at least 25 qualifying PADI certifications issued after your Instructor status becomes active
  • A progressive role, from observing and assisting to co-teaching and leading appropriate components
  • Feedback and mentoring from experienced Abyss Instructors
  • The certification experience required for MSDT when PADI’s other requirements are also met

What it does not mean

  • Twenty-five separate courses or necessarily 25 different students
  • Teaching complete courses alone before you are qualified and ready
  • A guaranteed fixed finish date regardless of student schedules, weather or performance
  • Automatic MSDT status simply because you attended the Prep course

The planned six-week OWSI timetable allows for this phase, but the exact teaching schedule can move with student demand, conditions and your demonstrated readiness. If more time is needed to complete the agreed qualifying certifications, Abyss will map the remaining mentored dates with you.

Support after qualification

Career support after qualification

A qualification matters. So does knowing how to present your experience, find suitable opportunities and make the transition from candidate to useful new Instructor.

Résumé

Dive-industry résumé assistance

Help presenting your qualifications, supervised teaching experience, strengths and availability clearly.

Mentoring

Ongoing professional guidance

Feedback on teaching, professional behaviour, development priorities and the next ratings that make sense for you.

Vacancies

Application and vacancy guidance

Help understanding suitable roles, employer expectations and how to approach current opportunities.

Introductions

Industry introductions where appropriate

Introductions may be made when a suitable contact or vacancy exists and Abyss believes the fit is appropriate.

Career support is included. Employment is not guaranteed.Hiring decisions, available vacancies and legal work rights remain outside Abyss’s control.

Optional add-on

Add a 28-day Vanuatu experience

Sydney teaches you how a busy local dive centre supports long-term customers. Vanuatu adds exposure to a tropical destination environment with a different pace, customer mix and style of diving.

28 days of shared budget accommodation

Three basic meals per day

Local transfers and a program T-shirt

Minimum 20 dives, subject always to safe operating conditions

Coming from interstate or overseas?

Plan the training and the life around it

Abyss can help you map your prerequisites, likely dates, Sydney accommodation areas and equipment needs. You remain responsible for travel, documents and legal work rights.

Before booking travel

Wait until Abyss has confirmed your eligibility, pathway, IDC and IE sequence, and expected start and finish dates.

Sydney accommodation

Budget separately. Ramsgate, Kogarah and Brighton-Le-Sands are practical areas near Abyss; an Advisor can explain the options.

Medical and insurance

Arrange the required physician-signed medical and insurance suitable for professional scuba training, travel and your planned activities.

Visas and work rights

A PADI rating does not give you permission to work. Check the conditions applying to Australia and Vanuatu before paying non-refundable travel costs.

Abyss provides general planning information, not migration advice. Check the Australian Department of Home Affairs or an authorised migration professional for advice relevant to you.

Short answers before you enquire

Instructor Internship FAQs

What is the difference between OWSI and MSDT?

OWSI is the Open Water Scuba Instructor rating that allows a qualified, Teaching-status PADI Instructor to teach core PADI programs within current standards. MSDT recognises an OWSI who holds at least five Specialty Instructor ratings and has issued at least 25 qualifying PADI certifications. It is a breadth-and-experience rating, not a different basic Instructor licence.

Do I need 60 or 100 logged dives?

Both numbers apply at different stages: at least 60 logged dives to start the IDC and at least 100 to attend the PADI Instructor Examination. A fresh Divemaster near 60 dives can enquire so Abyss can assess whether the included dive plan is realistic.

Are PADI fees included?

The program prices include the itemised 2026 materials, application and examination amounts shown on this page. Your Advisor will confirm the current schedule and exclusions in writing before payment. Later renewals, resits and replacement materials are not included unless expressly stated.

Does “25 student certifications” mean I teach 25 courses?

No. It refers to qualifying PADI certifications connected with your post-qualification teaching experience. It does not necessarily mean 25 different students or 25 separate courses. Your role grows with your readiness and remains governed by PADI standards and Abyss oversight.

Is equipment or Sydney accommodation included?

No. Instructor candidates should plan to own their full dive and safety equipment. Tanks and weights used within the agreed program are included; personal gear, professional indemnity insurance, medical, Sydney accommodation, meals, travel and living costs are separate unless your written plan says otherwise.

Will I get a job after the internship?

Employment is not guaranteed. Abyss provides résumé assistance, mentoring, practical student-teaching experience, vacancy guidance and introductions where appropriate. Employers make their own hiring decisions, and you must hold the legal right to work.

Can international candidates join?

Yes, subject to PADI eligibility, suitable dates, travel documents and visa conditions. Abyss can help with program and Sydney planning but cannot provide migration advice or guarantee visa approval, entry or work rights.

Can I add Vanuatu?

Yes, subject to confirmed dates and availability. The current A$1,000 add-on includes 28 days of shared budget accommodation, three basic meals a day, local transfers, a T-shirt and at least 20 planned dives. Flights and other personal costs are separate.
