Plan Your PADI Diving Internship with Confidence

If your goal is employment in a destination dive centre or resort, OWSI + MSDT gives you greater teaching range and a stronger experience profile. You do not need to choose before enquiring.

Entry to the overall Abyss internship is not the same as entry to the formal PADI professional course inside it.

• Divemaster Internship: you may enter the broader Abyss pathway from PADI Open Water Diver or a qualifying entry-level certification. The earlier stages build the Advanced, Rescue, first aid, experience and dive-count prerequisites you need before the formal Divemaster course begins.
• OWSI Internship: this pathway is for a PADI Divemaster, PADI Assistant Instructor or a qualifying leadership-level professional. It is designed to take a recent Divemaster from approximately 60 dives toward the 100 dives required for the Instructor Examination.
• OWSI + MSDT Internship: entry is the same as OWSI. The Specialty Instructor and MSDT stages follow the instructor-development phase.

If you already hold some included qualifications, Abyss will review your cards, logged dives and recent experience before confirming your sequence, duration and package.

Before the formal PADI Divemaster course phase

• Be at least 18 years old.
• Hold PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver, or qualifying certifications.
• Have CPR and First Aid training completed within the previous 24 months.
• Have at least 40 logged dives to begin and at least 60 to earn the Divemaster rating.
• Have a physician-signed medical clearance completed within the previous 12 months.

Before the formal PADI Instructor Development Course

• Be at least 18 and be a PADI Divemaster, PADI Assistant Instructor or qualifying leadership-level professional.
• Have been a certified diver for at least six months.
• Have at least 60 logged dives to begin the IDC and at least 100 to attend the Instructor Examination.
• Have qualifying CPR and First Aid training within the previous 24 months.
• Have a physician-signed medical statement within the previous 12 months.
• Hold the EFR Instructor rating before instructor certification; it can be earned during instructor training.

Before PADI awards the MSDT rating

You must be a PADI Instructor, hold at least five PADI Specialty Instructor ratings and have certified at least 25 PADI divers. The Abyss combined pathway includes five preset Specialty Instructor courses and supervised experience linked to 25 student certifications.

The optional 28-night Vanuatu experience is an additional AUD $1,000. It includes shared accommodation, three basic meals a day, local transfers and a minimum of 20 dives; international flights, travel insurance and personal spending are separate.

All prices are in Australian dollars. If you already hold included qualifications, Abyss will review your pathway before confirming whether the sequence, duration or package price should change.

Divemaster Internship

The package covers training for PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, Emergency First Response, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Enriched Air Nitrox, Deep Diver, Freediver Specialty and Dive Equipment Specialist where required. It also includes the required diving experience, tanks, weights and air fills, five days of equipment hire if needed, PADI Divemaster application and program-specific fees, mentoring, course assistance and Abyss Dive Club membership.

OWSI Internship

The package includes the Instructor Development Course, EFR Instructor, IDC eLearning and crew materials, PADI IDC application and Instructor Examination fees, Enriched Air Instructor training and application, at least 40 dives, tanks and weights, ongoing mentoring, and supervised team teaching linked to 25 student certifications.

OWSI + MSDT Internship

This includes everything in the OWSI Internship plus five preset Specialty Instructor courses—Deep, Enriched Air, Sidemount, Dry Suit and Night—together with the related Specialty Instructor applications and MSDT application fee. It also includes continued mentoring, team-teaching experience and the planned certification experience needed to work toward the MSDT rating.

• Divemaster: approximately nine weeks full-time. Graduates are expected to finish with approximately 60–100 logged dives, depending on their starting point and progress.
• OWSI: approximately six weeks full-time. The program includes at least 40 dives and is deliberately planned with enough time for a recent Divemaster to build experience and reach the Instructor Examination dive requirement.
• OWSI + MSDT: allow approximately ten weeks overall—the six-week OWSI pathway plus roughly four further weeks for the MSDT preparation and experience stage.

Final timing depends on what you already hold, IDC and Instructor Examination dates, student-course schedules, weather, candidate progress and completion of the required certifications. Overseas candidates should also allow arrival and settling time before training.

The Divemaster Internship has both formats. Full-time is approximately nine weeks and normally involves five training days each week. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are core training days; two additional training days and two days off are rostered between Monday and Thursday. The part-time pathway is approximately six months and is built around work, study or family commitments.

The OWSI and OWSI + MSDT pathways are normally planned as intensive full-time programs because IDC dates, the Instructor Examination, real student courses and team-teaching opportunities must align. If you need a split-stage or reduced-week schedule, explain your availability in the enquiry. It may be possible to design a longer plan, but it must be confirmed individually.

Sydney accommodation is not included. Interns commonly look around Ramsgate, Kogarah, Brighton-Le-Sands and nearby southern Sydney suburbs for practical access to Abyss, public transport, shops and beaches. Abyss can discuss nearby options after learning your budget, preferred accommodation style and whether you will have a vehicle.

Daily transport to the dive centre, pools, wharves and dive sites is not a general package inclusion, so budget for public transport, rideshare or car access. Some early starts and changing dive sites make a vehicle useful. The Divemaster package includes return Sydney Airport transfers; Instructor candidates should confirm arrival arrangements in their personalised plan.

International candidates are welcome, but the internship itself does not create a right to enter, study, train or work in Australia. Before paying non-refundable costs or booking flights, check that your travel authority or visa covers the full duration and every planned activity.

No. Abyss internships are fee-paying training and professional-development programs. They are not paid employment, a job offer, an employment contract or a promise of sponsorship.

Practical dive-centre exposure, course assistance and team teaching are supervised parts of the training pathway. For visa purposes, some unpaid or workplace-based activity may still be treated as work, so international candidates must confirm that their own visa permits every planned activity.

You train inside a working Sydney dive centre with real divers and real students. Support can include professional mentoring, course assistance, dive-centre operations, customer care, equipment and logistics exposure, marketing and business workshops, resume guidance, job-search support, references where appropriate and feedback on the professional habits employers value.

OWSI and OWSI + MSDT candidates receive supervised team-teaching experience linked to at least 25 student certifications. The combined pathway also broadens the courses you can teach through five preset Specialty Instructor ratings.

The optional Vanuatu experience adds exposure to a tropical island destination operation, including a minimum of 20 dives and practical experience in a different customer and resort environment.

The current Divemaster and OWSI booking pathways offer a AUD $500 deposit. It secures the agreed place, is credited toward the full package price and starts the detailed planning process. The deposit is described as non-refundable, subject to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

The remaining balance and payment dates are confirmed before training. Flexible payment arrangements may be available up to the start date. For OWSI + MSDT, Abyss will confirm the booking structure and payment schedule in your personalised plan.

If you already hold included certifications, do not assume that each retail course price will simply be deducted. Abyss first reviews your qualifications, recent experience, logged dives and what training you still need, then confirms any adjustment in writing.
