This internship is for a diver who wants the training, repetition and supervised experience behind the Divemaster card—not simply the shortest route to certification.
Choose the internship if you want to:
- Start from Open Water or fill several gaps before Divemaster.
- Dive regularly enough to build genuine comfort and judgement.
- Assist real courses and understand the rhythm of a working dive centre.
- Receive direct observation, feedback and mentoring from experienced PADI professionals.

The AUD $5,195 package covers the professional training pathway and its core diving logistics. Sydney accommodation and your personal professional requirements remain separate.
Included in the Sydney internship
- Training for all nine listed qualifications, where not already held.

- Tanks, weights and air fills used throughout the internship.
- Unlimited use of Abyss tanks and weights for additional diving outside scheduled training.
- Five days of equipment hire if required while you organise your own professional setup.
- PADI Divemaster application, membership and program-specific fees.
- Professional mentoring, course-assistance experience and Abyss Dive Club membership.
Not included in the Sydney internship
- Your ongoing personal diving and safety equipment beyond the five included hire days.
- Your professional indemnity insurance.
- A physician-signed dive medical completed within the past 12 months.
- Accommodation while you are based in Sydney.
- Flights, visas, travel insurance and personal living expenses.
Abyss can help you plan equipment and nearby accommodation, but these items are not hidden inside the package price.
What “unlimited diving” permits
During your internship, you can use Abyss tanks and weights to build additional experience on days outside the formal training schedule. Diving remains subject to normal buddy, safety, site-access, conditions and centre-availability requirements. “Unlimited” refers to tanks, weights and air fills; it does not convert every optional dive service or your personal equipment into an inclusion.

Both can lead to the PADI Divemaster rating. The difference is how much preparatory training, diving, mentoring and dive-centre experience you need around the qualification.

What Training Inside a Working Dive Centre Feels Like
Full-time interns train five days each week. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are always training days because that is when much of our recreational diver training takes place. Your other two training days—and your two days off—are rostered between Monday and Thursday around course dates, sea conditions and your progress.

See Sydney, Not Just the Dive Centre
An overseas internship should feel like time in Australia, not seven straight days in training. Your two free days fall between Monday and Thursday and can be used to rest, catch up on personal tasks or build memorable Sydney experiences around your training.
Iconic Sydney
Cross the full Harbour Bridge on the BridgeClimb Ultimate, or book a surf lesson or board hire at Bondi or Manly—subject to conditions.
Big Adrenaline
Take on guided rafting at Penrith’s Olympic whitewater course when a weekday session is available, or skydive near Wollongong from up to 15,000 feet.
Coast and Wild Places
Walk the 10km Spit Bridge to Manly track, climb to Barrenjoey Lighthouse, or explore a section of Royal National Park’s Coast Track. View Wedding Cake Rock only from behind the fence; attempt Figure Eight Pools only when the official tide and wave-risk guidance says conditions are safe.
Harbour and Nightlife
Camp beside the harbour on Cockatoo Island, take a pre-booked day trip to Shark Island, or explore historic pubs in The Rocks and live music in Newtown.
These activities are optional, independently booked and not included in the internship price. Wait until your roster is confirmed, choose flexible bookings where possible, check current park and operator conditions, and schedule altitude or strenuous activities so they do not conflict with diving safety.
What “course assistance” means
You work under a qualified instructor on real training activities. Depending on the course and your stage, that can include preparing equipment, welcoming students, helping with logistics, observing briefings and demonstrations, supporting surface and in-water control, watching for stress, and contributing to debriefs.
It does not mean independently teaching courses before you hold the appropriate instructor qualification.

After becoming a dive professional, you can add practical experience at Abyss Vanuatu on Moso. You will see how a tropical destination dive centre operates, enjoy excellent diving and add useful cross-destination experience to your résumé.
Included in the Vanuatu option
- 28 nights of shared accommodation.

Coming from overseas
Plan Your Sydney Internship Properly
International divers are welcome, but the internship package does not replace the travel, immigration, medical, insurance and accommodation planning needed for a longer stay in Australia.
Before you book travel
Confirm your proposed start window, allow time to settle in Sydney, and arrange the required dive medical, insurance and equipment.
Accommodation
Sydney accommodation is not included. Tell us your budget and transport needs so we can discuss practical nearby options.
Visas and work rights
The internship is training and does not create Australian work rights. Check your visa conditions directly with the Department of Home Affairs or a qualified migration adviser.
Abyss can advise on the diving pathway, not immigration law. Do not book flights or accept work based on an assumption about your visa.

Can I start the Divemaster Internship as an Open Water diver?
Yes. The broader Abyss pathway includes the Advanced, Rescue, first aid, specialty and Divemaster training needed to progress from Open Water. You must be at least 18 and have a physician-signed dive medical completed within the past 12 months before the relevant professional stages.
How long does it take, and how many dives should I expect?
The intensive pathway is approximately nine weeks full-time. An approximately six-month part-time option is available subject to scheduling. Graduates are expected to finish within a 60–100 logged-dive range, depending on their starting experience, progress, conditions and pathway.
What is included in the AUD $5,195 price?
The package includes the nine listed qualifications where required, training, required diving experience, tanks, weights, air fills, five days of equipment hire if needed, PADI Divemaster program fees, mentoring, course assistance and Dive Club membership. Your ongoing personal equipment, professional indemnity insurance, dive medical, Sydney accommodation, travel and personal expenses are not included.
What happens if I already hold some of the included qualifications?
Enquire before booking. We will review your cards, logged dives and recent experience, then confirm whether your training sequence, duration or package should be adjusted. We do not assume that every applicant should repeat the same pathway.
Can international divers apply?
Yes. International applicants must arrange suitable travel permission, verify their visa conditions, and organise the medical, insurance, equipment and Sydney accommodation they need. The internship is training and does not itself provide Australian work rights.
