Meet Mengbo “Bo” Liu, Training and Business Development Manager and PADI Course Director at Abyss Scuba Diving in Sydney. Bo is known for calm, structured teaching, global dive experience and helping divers progress from their first scuba course through to professional-level training.
Mengbo “Bo” Liu is the Training and Business Development Manager and a PADI Course Director at Abyss Scuba Diving. He is known for his calm teaching style, international diving background and dedication to helping students and new instructors succeed.
Bo brings a global perspective to diver education. His experience includes the Great Barrier Reef, Seychelles, Thailand, the Maldives, Bali and Sydney, giving him a broad understanding of how people learn to dive in different environments and cultures.
As a Chinese-speaking Course Director in Australia, Bo also helps bridge cultures and supports divers who want clear, patient instruction while they build skills, confidence and professional pathways in scuba diving.
Bo’s diving journey began on the Great Barrier Reef after an uncertain first Discover Scuba Diving experience became the start of a lifelong passion. By 2013, he was training regularly with his local PADI centre and progressed through the professional ranks to become a PADI Divemaster in the Seychelles.
After completing his PADI Instructor Development Course in Koh Tao, Thailand, in 2015, Bo worked at Anantara Kihavah Villas in the Maldives, a 5-star resort where he taught hundreds of guests their first dives while developing strong service and teaching standards.
Bo completed the PADI Course Director Training Course in Phuket in 2022 and later joined Abyss Scuba Diving in Sydney. Today, he helps divers progress from Learn to Dive students through to PADI professional training.
Bo creates a calm, structured learning environment that helps new divers overcome nerves, understand skills and enjoy their first underwater experiences.
As a PADI Course Director, Bo mentors future dive professionals and helps instructor candidates build confidence, teaching control and professional judgement.
Bo teaches and trains across specialty areas including deep diving, wreck diving, enriched air, night diving, search and recovery, underwater navigation and photography.
Bo’s international background helps him support students from different cultures, experience levels and learning styles, including Chinese-speaking divers in Sydney.
Bo believes great divers are trained through patience, practice and clear guidance. His classes focus on safety, comfort, confidence-building and helping each diver understand not just what to do, but why each skill matters.
“Every student who takes their first breath underwater reminds me why I started teaching. Watching divers overcome fear, discover freedom and fall in love with the ocean — that’s what it’s all about.”
Whether he is teaching a new diver or mentoring a future instructor, Bo aims to create a learning environment where people feel supported, capable and ready for their next step.
Since moving to Sydney, Bo has become a strong advocate for the city’s local diving. His favourite sites include Magic Point for grey nurse sharks, Bare Island for macro life and The Steps at Kurnell for weedy seadragons.
These sites help Bo show divers that Sydney has world-class diving close to home, with the right conditions, preparation and guidance.
Bo’s credentials reflect his progression from recreational diver to professional instructor trainer, with strong experience across instructor development, specialty training and emergency response education.
Bo enjoys helping people move from uncertainty to confidence. He sees every course as a chance to help someone discover freedom underwater, connect with the ocean and build skills they can carry into future dives.
As a Course Director, his goal is to empower new instructors to create that same experience for their own students, helping divers turn their passion into a career through PADI Instructor training in Sydney.
If you are ready to learn to dive in Sydney or take the next step toward becoming a PADI professional, Bo is happy to help you choose the right course or training pathway.
