Mengbo Liu
Meet Mengbo “Bo” Liu – PADI Course Director & Training Manager in Sydney
Position: Training and Business Development Manager
PADI Certification: Course Director
Summary: Bo Liu is a highly respected PADI Course Director at Abyss Scuba Diving in Sydney, known for his calm teaching style, global diving experience, and dedication to helping new instructors thrive. As one of only two Chinese Course Directors in Australia, Bo bridges cultures and inspires the next generation of dive professionals.
Experience and Qualifications
Bo’s diving journey began more than a decade ago on the Great Barrier Reef. What started as a hesitant Discover Scuba Diving experience soon turned into a lifelong passion. By 2013, he was training regularly with his local PADI centre and quickly progressed through the professional ranks to become a PADI Divemaster in Seychelles.
After earning his PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) certification in Koh Tao, Thailand, in 2015, Bo worked with Anantara Kihavah Villas in the Maldives—a 5-star resort where he taught hundreds of guests their first dives while mastering world-class service standards. His path took him from the Maldives to Bali and back to Asia, where he gained advanced teaching experience and specialty instructor credentials.
Bo completed the prestigious PADI Course Director Training Course (CDTC) in Phuket in 2022 and soon joined the Abyss Scuba Diving team in Sydney as the company’s first Chinese Course Director. Today, he leads professional training and business development, helping divers progress from Learn to Dive students all the way to PADI Instructors.
Specialties and Teaching Style
Bo is certified to teach and train instructors in a wide range of specialties, including Deep, Wreck, Digital Underwater Photography, Enriched Air (Nitrox), Night Diving, and Search & Recovery. He’s also an Emergency First Response Instructor Trainer and Freediver.
Known for his patient, structured approach, Bo believes that “great divers aren’t born—they’re trained.” He focuses on confidence-building, safety, and creating a calm learning environment where every student feels supported underwater.
Favourite Sydney Dive Sites
Since moving to Sydney, Bo has fallen in love with the city’s vibrant dive scene. You’ll often find him guiding or teaching at Magic Point (to spot grey nurse sharks), Bare Island (for macro life), and The Steps at Kurnell (a top site for weedy sea dragons). He enjoys showing divers that Sydney offers world-class diving right at its doorstep.
Why I Love Teaching Diving
“Every student who takes their first breath underwater reminds me why I started teaching,” Bo says. “Watching divers overcome fear, discover freedom, and fall in love with the ocean—that’s what it’s all about.”
His goal as a Course Director is to empower others to share that same experience, helping divers turn their passion into a career through PADI Instructor training in Sydney.
