The PADI Divemaster Course is your first professional-level scuba qualification. Working closely with Abyss PADI instructors, you will develop the knowledge, water skills, rescue readiness, judgement and leadership ability needed to supervise certified divers and assist instructors with student training.

Prerequisites for Divemaster Training
You need to meet the PADI Divemaster prerequisites before starting this course. Contact Abyss before booking if you are close but still need to complete one of the requirements.
Minimum Age
You must be at least 18 years old to complete PADI Divemaster training.
Certification Level
You need PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver certifications, or qualifying equivalent certifications.
First Aid and CPR
You need Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care, or qualifying CPR and first aid training, completed within the past 24 months.
Logged Dives
You need at least 40 logged dives to begin the course and 60 logged dives to earn certification.
Dive Medical
You need to be fit for diving and provide a medical statement signed by a physician within the past 12 months.

Course Duration
Full-Time Course
Approximately 14 days, including 10 days of training and 4 days for study, preparation and remedial work where required.
Part-Time Course
Approximately 5 weekends spread over up to 8 weeks. The first two core weekends are fixed.

Deposit and Payment Options
You may be able to secure your place with a $500 non-refundable deposit and pay the balance before your Divemaster Course begins. The deposit holds your position and gives you access to your PADI Divemaster eLearning so you can start preparing.

What’s Not Included
The PADI Divemaster Course at Abyss provides professional training and mentoring, but you should plan separately for the items below.
PADI Membership Fees
After successful completion, you will need to pay the relevant PADI application or membership fee directly to PADI to receive your official Divemaster certification.
Professional Liability Insurance
If you intend to work as a Divemaster in Australia or overseas, professional liability insurance should be arranged separately.
Dive Medical
A valid dive medical is required before starting the course and is at your own expense.
First Aid and CPR
You need current qualifying first aid and CPR training. If required, this can be arranged before your Divemaster training.
Personal Dive Equipment
Candidates are expected to provide core personal gear such as mask, snorkel, fins, boots and wetsuit.
Required PADI Materials
Required materials such as the PADI Instructor Manual, Divemaster slates, eRDPML and Encyclopaedia of Recreational Diving may need to be purchased separately.
Safety Equipment
Divemaster candidates should have appropriate safety equipment such as an SMB, whistle and cutting tool.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation and meals are not included unless specifically stated. Abyss can help with local recommendations if you are travelling to Sydney.
Travel and Visa Costs
Flights, transport, visa costs and living expenses are not included. International candidates must check their own visa conditions.
International and Interstate Divers
Divers travel to Sydney for both Divemaster courses and Divemaster internships. Make sure you plan accommodation, travel, medicals, insurance, equipment and visa requirements before booking.
Important visa note
Visa rules depend on your passport, age, length of stay and whether you plan to work while in Australia. A Visitor visa or Electronic Travel Authority does not allow work in Australia. Working Holiday and Work and Holiday visas may allow short-term work and study, depending on eligibility and visa conditions. Always check the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
After Divemaster: Instructor and Beyond
Your PADI Divemaster certification is the gateway to further professional development. After certification, many divers continue into the PADI Instructor Development Course, the Dive Instructor Internship, specialty instructor ratings or longer-term dive industry work.

Is this the same as the Divemaster Internship?
No. This is the standard PADI Divemaster Course. The Divemaster Internship is a longer, more immersive pathway with more diving, broader included training and real dive centre experience.
Who should choose the standard Divemaster Course?
Choose the standard course if you already hold Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, current first aid and CPR, have at least 40 logged dives, and want the focused route to Divemaster certification.
Who should choose the Divemaster Internship?
Choose the internship if you want more mentoring, more diving, included core courses, 60+ logged dives, unlimited diving and a career-style pathway inside a working dive centre.
How many logged dives do I need?
You need at least 40 logged dives to begin PADI Divemaster training and 60 logged dives to earn the certification.
How long does the course take?
The full-time option is approximately 14 days. The part-time option is 5 weekends spread over up to 8 weeks.
What certifications do I need before starting?
