Training Advice
Ask about the Snorkelling Leader Course, entry requirements, pre-reading and the best option for your group. It is a useful starting point whether you are organising teacher training, preparing an outdoor education program or leading a youth group.
Start with your question: Is my experience suitable? What medical and first-aid documents do I need? Can two or three of us train privately?
Open Training Advice to ask your question. Contact Abyss to confirm dates, prerequisites and your booking.
Practical leadership skills
Build the habits that help a group feel prepared, supported and involved.
Use activity plans, assess the site and conditions, identify hazards and match the session to the group's abilities.
Check equipment fit, explain signals and boundaries, demonstrate techniques and check understanding.
Manage group movement, monitor comfort, maintain communication and adapt to changing needs or conditions.
Practise rescue responses and emergency scenarios, conduct debriefs and complete incident and equipment-fault reports.
Built around the people you lead
A mask that does not fit. A participant who has gone quiet. Instructions that need another explanation.
Practise recognising uncertainty, adapting your communication and keeping a group engaged while maintaining clear boundaries. Bring your school's or youth organisation's goals to the conversation with your trainer.
Pre-reading + two practical training days
Complete your pre-reading before attending the two practical training days. The remaining course hours are completed through this pre-reading; Abyss will confirm the materials and preparation required.
DAY 1 Build the foundations
Explore a leader's responsibilities, equipment, environmental considerations and emergency planning.
Develop and assess your water stamina, snorkelling techniques and initial rescue skills.
DAY 2 Put it into practice
Practise briefings, group supervision and rescue responses in practical leadership workshops.
Complete the required knowledge assessment and review your performance with your trainer.
The two practical training days are designed for participants with suitable prior experience who have completed the pre-reading. Conditions and individual progress may affect the schedule; all required knowledge and practical assessments must be completed, and additional training or assessment may be needed.
Arrive ready to train
Every participant must meet these requirements before starting.
A current medical confirming fitness for snorkelling. Submit your documentation to Abyss before the course.

Snorkelling entry may be through SISOSNK001 Snorkel, PADI Skin Diver (Advanced Snorkeller), PADI Freediver, or qualifying certification and/or experience accepted by the trainer.
EFR Primary and Secondary Care must have been completed within 24 months. If you hold other first-aid training, ask Abyss to confirm acceptance. Current CPR certification is also required.
You will complete enrolment and foundation-skills checks. You need to understand instructions, communicate clearly and complete course records.
The trainer will explain the assessment conditions and any permitted adaptations. Contact Abyss before booking if you need foundation training or want to discuss your readiness.
On successful completion, PADI Asia Pacific Pty Ltd (RTO 6729) issues your Statement of Attainment for SISOSNK002 Lead snorkelling activities.
*Assessment includes leading three snorkelling sessions, adapting activities, responding to simulated risks and emergencies, and completing required records. The award depends on demonstrated competency, not attendance alone.
