Divers building confidence together during professional training

More than a course

Grow into the diver others rely on

An internship gives you time to put your training into practice. Prepare for dives, assist as your skills develop, listen to feedback and learn alongside working dive professionals. Confidence grows through experience and support, one responsibility at a time.

Questions worth asking

Before you take the next step

Which internship should I choose?

If you are a recreational diver, the Divemaster Internship is the first professional pathway to explore. If you are already a Divemaster, OWSI leads towards becoming an Instructor; OWSI + MSDT adds broader specialty-teaching qualifications. Tell us your goal and we can talk through the options.

Can I enquire if I am only exploring or planning for next year?

Yes. You do not need a firm start date or a decision about your career. Tell us what interests you and roughly when you might be ready. We can discuss the preparation that would help and a useful time to continue the conversation.

Do I need to meet every prerequisite before enquiring?

No. Share your current certification and approximate dive count. We can then discuss your recent diving, specialty qualifications, goals and experience in different conditions, and identify any preparation needed.

What is the difference between OWSI and OWSI + MSDT?

Both pathways include the core Instructor training and mentored teaching experience. OWSI + MSDT includes five Specialty Instructor ratings in total and the MSDT application pathway. It does not add a second 25-certification teaching phase. MSDT is awarded only after its PADI requirements are met and the application is approved.

What do I need to arrange separately?

Exact inclusions vary by pathway. Generally plan separately for personal dive and safety equipment, professional indemnity insurance, a diving medical, Sydney accommodation, meals, travel, visa and living costs. Your personalised plan confirms the exact position before you pay.

Does completing an internship guarantee me a job?

No. Abyss provides structured training, practical experience and mentoring. Instructor pathways also include résumé support and career guidance. Employers make their own hiring decisions, and you must hold the legal right to work in the place where you apply.

Can I talk to a person instead of the AI assistant?

Yes. Choose “Start an email conversation” and send your name, email and question, or use the pathway enquiry form on this page. You can also email internships@abyss.com.au or call 02 9583 9662. You can keep asking questions by replying to the team’s email.
