Do You Need A License To Dive?

Do You Need a License to Dive?

In order to become a certified scuba diver, you will need to take a diving course known as the Open Water Diver Course. This is a course designed to teach you all the basics of scuba diving.

To dive, you must have a license. It would be foolhardy to dive without training and certification. Technically, it is not illegal to scuba dive without one, but dive shops do not rent out equipment, fill tanks or allow you on the dive boat if you are a non-certified diver.

Getting certified is relatively easy and inexpensive. The open water diver course includes three parts: academics, confined water training and open water dives. You can take the course at your leisure, although most people complete their Open Water Diver Course by taking ten hours of online theory combined with just two days of in-water training.

A scuba certification course is a lot more than just learning how to explore the underwater world safely; it is a step into a brave new world of limitless possibilities. It is a fantastic way to connect with the natural world. At the end of your PADI Open Water Diver course, you will have gained a greater appreciation for our earth's oceans.

What’s Involved in Getting a License to Dive?

PADI Open Water Courses are the first step towards becoming a Scuba Diver, they teach basic scuba diving theory and dive skills in small groups, making the entire process fun, interactive and easy to learn. In this blog we’re going to go over what goes into a PADI Open Water course from start to finish so you can be all set for your first dive!

While it may seem like a lot to take in, don’t worry at Abyss Diving we go out of our way to make the learning process fun and interactive, so you and your friends are ready for your first dive in no time at all.

The first step is completing the PADI eLearning program. This can be done from the comfort of your own home at a time that suits you and takes around 8-10 hours to complete. Once you have completed the online learning, you will need to come in for a pool session where our instructors will go over some of the key skills with you.

After you have finished your pool sessions, it’s time for the open water dives! You will learn to dive by diving to a maximum depth of eighteen meters. The open water course includes four ocean dives, with your instructor by your side, you’ll practice the skills you learned in confined water, and discover the underwater world.

Once you have successfully completed your Open Water Course, congrats! You are now a certified Open Water Diver, and you have your license to dive!

How Much Does a Dive License Cost?

Scuba lessons cost a small amount of money when compared to surfing lessons, golf instruction, or an amazing night out! Learning to scuba dive is a terrific value because you earn a certification that’s last for life.

At Abyss Scuba Diving, we offer three different paths to become a certified PADI Open Water Diver. The three different paths are tailored around the varying needs, experience levels, and budgets of divers and range in price from $299 to $899.
