PADI specialty course • Four boat dives
Build the planning, gas-management and awareness skills needed for recreational dives beyond 18 metres. Complete four instructor-guided boat dives over two days and train for deeper diving within your certification, experience and personal limits.
Train for the added demands of depth
Deeper recreational dives can provide access to reefs, wrecks and marine life outside standard Open Water depth limits, but depth changes gas use, buoyancy, light, temperature and the consequences of small problems.
The PADI Deep Diver course develops a methodical approach to deep-dive planning. You will practise gas management, buddy contact, buoyancy control and responses to nitrogen narcosis while completing four supervised dives.
More range, better judgement
Train for dives beyond 18 metres and, when appropriate, to a maximum recreational depth of 40 metres.
Understand how depth accelerates gas consumption and why turn pressure, reserve and ascent planning must be agreed before the dive.
Develop awareness of narcosis, task loading, buoyancy changes, reduced no-decompression time and the longer ascent from depth.
Knowledge and in-water practice
Build a repeatable process for planning and conducting recreational deep dives with a buddy.
Review depth, time, no-decompression limits, gas, ascent requirements, conditions and contingency options before entering the water.
Monitor your breathing gas closely and use a planned turn point and reserve that account for depth and the ascent.
Identify possible signs of nitrogen narcosis and respond by communicating with your buddy and moving to a shallower depth.
Use positioning and communication procedures that help the team stay together and respond early when a concern develops.
Manage compression-related buoyancy changes and maintain control during descent, at depth and throughout the ascent.
Consider the equipment, redundancy, signalling and reference tools appropriate to the planned recreational deep dive.
Course structure
Finish the assigned online study before the course weekend so the two training days can focus on planning, briefings and progressive in-water experience.
Work through the PADI knowledge development covering deep-dive planning, equipment and safety considerations.
Begin applying the planning, descent, buoyancy, buddy and gas-management procedures with your instructor.
Continue the progression, demonstrate sound judgement and complete the remaining course performance requirements.
Conditions matter: dive sites, schedules and maximum training depth may change with weather, ocean conditions, student readiness and instructor judgement.
Course package
Four instructor-guided deep-training dives completed across two course days.
PADI knowledge development to complete before the practical training.
PADI Deep Diver Specialty certification after successfully meeting all course requirements.
Equipment for both days
You need a complete scuba equipment set, including a cylinder, for both course days. If you do not own all the required gear, book equipment hire separately for each training day when you enrol.
Optional course bundle
The Dive Longer Bundle adds PADI Enriched Air Diver training to this continuing-education course and currently advertises $100 off the Enriched Air course when booked together, subject to the current offer terms.
Important: nitrox does not automatically make a dive safer or permit more time at every depth. Each mix has a maximum operating depth and must be analysed, planned and used within its oxygen-exposure limits.
Before you book
You must be at least 15 years old.
PADI Adventure Diver or a qualifying certification from another recognised training organisation.
Read and complete the participant medical questionnaire. A doctor’s clearance is required if your answers indicate professional review is needed.
Common questions
No. Forty metres is the maximum depth for the adult recreational specialty, not a required depth for every dive. Actual depths depend on the training progression, conditions and instructor judgement.
No. This is a recreational specialty focused on dives planned within no-decompression limits. Planned staged-decompression diving requires separate technical-diving training and equipment.
The supplied course information directs divers without a complete setup, including cylinders, to book equipment hire separately for both course days.
Only when the analysed mix is appropriate for the planned depth and you hold the required certification. Many common nitrox mixes have maximum operating depths shallower than 40 metres.
Deep training depends on safe boat and ocean conditions. Sites, depths or scheduling may change when conditions are unsuitable; contact Abyss for the arrangements applying to your course date.
Choose an available course date, complete your medical screening and prepare for four instructor-guided boat dives over two days.
