Go deeper with a complete technical system
PADI Tec 45 extends your open-circuit depth limit to 45 metres/150 feet and develops the skills to plan single and repetitive decompression dives using one decompression cylinder. You will train in double cylinders configured as backmount or sidemount.
The course builds on Tec 40 planning, gas management, team procedures and problem solving. Greater depth and decompression exposure increase the consequences of gas, equipment or procedural failures, so every dive must be finite, adequately supplied and supported by written primary and contingency plans.

What PADI Tec 45 prepares you to do
Develop the planning and execution skills required for deeper, repetitive technical decompression dives using a single decompression gas.
Plan repetitive decompression
Use current planning software and decompression computers to build single and repetitive dive schedules with appropriate surface intervals.
Use one decompression cylinder
Carry one planned decompression gas containing up to 100 percent oxygen, analysed and used only within its operating limits.
Progress towards Tec 50
Tec 45 is the required PADI certification step before Tec 50 training.
Course limit: Tec 45 does not qualify a diver for depths beyond 45 metres, a second decompression gas, trimix unless the Tec 45 Trimix option is completed, CCR diving, solo technical diving, or cave and wreck-penetration environments. Separate training is required.

Analyse, label, carry and switch to the decompression gas only after the team verifies the cylinder and planned switch depth.
Stable ascents and stops
Control buoyancy, trim, position and task loading while following a staged ascent and deploying the required surface marker.
Team procedures
Use detailed briefings, equipment checks, communication, positioning and shared situational awareness throughout the dive.
Emergency and rescue responses
Prepare for foreseeable failures and practise configuration-appropriate responses without losing control of depth, the team or the decompression schedule.
Course structure
Digital study, practical application and four training dives
Complete the assigned PADI Tec 45 eLearning and dive-planning work before the applicable instructor sessions. The Abyss program then develops the equipment and water skills across practical work and four training dives.

Study the current digital course materials and complete assigned decompression, gas and contingency plans before attending.
Practical and confined-water work
Configure and inspect the complete technical system, rehearse team procedures and refine core skills before deeper open-water application.

Apply progressively deeper planning, decompression, gas-switch, ascent, team and emergency procedures under a PADI Tec 45 Instructor.

Before you enrol
Certification and experience prerequisites
Bring proof of current certifications, CPR and First Aid training, logged experience and medical clearance. Qualifying certifications from another recognised training organisation may be accepted after assessment by the Tec 45 Instructor.
PADI Tec 40 Diver
Hold PADI Tec 40 or a qualifying open-circuit technical-diving certification accepted by the instructor.
PADI Rescue Diver
Hold PADI Rescue Diver or a qualifying equivalent certification.
Current CPR and First Aid
Provide proof of CPR and First Aid training completed within the previous two years.
Minimum 50 logged dives
Have at least 50 logged dives, including at least 10 dives deeper than 30 metres/100 feet.
Minimum age 18
You must be at least 18 years old when starting PADI Tec 45 training.
Configuration readiness
Demonstrate current Tec 40-level skills in the selected backmount or sidemount configuration to the instructor’s satisfaction.
Physician-signed dive medical required
Provide the required Diver Medical Form signed by a physician within the previous 12 months. Submit it by the deadline in your joining instructions and contact Abyss if your health or medication changes before training.
Complete technical configuration
Equipment you will need
Tec 45 uses double cylinders in backmount or sidemount, plus one decompression cylinder. Your instructor must approve the complete configuration, cylinder roles, gases, service status and fit before training.
Life-support configuration
- Manifolded backmount doubles or an instructor-approved technical sidemount doubles configuration
- Configuration-specific primary regulators, including an appropriate long-hose regulator for gas sharing
- One decompression cylinder, valve, regulator and pressure gauge maintained in oxygen-compatible service for the intended gas and filling method
- Two suitable multigas decompression dive computers
- Redundant buoyancy appropriate to the complete configuration and exposure system
Exposure and safety equipment
- Exposure protection suitable for depth, decompression duration, site and season
- DSMB or lift bag with a suitable reel or spool, plus audible surface signalling
- Wetnotes or slate, compass and the required written plans
- Two independently accessible cutting devices
- Any site-specific equipment identified by the instructor

Plan, verify, execute
Higher oxygen requires precise gas switches
“Up to 100 percent oxygen” never means oxygen can be breathed at any depth. Every gas must be personally analysed, labelled, entered correctly in the plan and computers, and used only at an appropriate switch depth within its maximum operating depth. A wrong-gas switch can cause central nervous system oxygen toxicity, loss of consciousness and drowning.
Decompression is finite
The planned obligation must fit the available gases, reserves, environmental exposure and team contingency limits.
A direct ascent may not be available
Plan credible responses that preserve gas, buoyancy, the team and required stops when a problem occurs.
Training manages, not removes, risk
Decompression sickness, oxygen toxicity, narcosis, gas loss, equipment failure and environmental exposure remain possible.

Frequently asked questions
Is the depth limit 45 metres/145 feet or 150 feet?
The current PADI course specification states 45 metres/150 feet. Metric and imperial values are rounded equivalents; your operative limit remains the shallower limit required by your training, plan, environment and local rules.
Does Tec 45 allow unlimited decompression?
No. Tec 45 advances beyond Tec 40’s limited-decompression scope, but every dive must have a finite schedule supported by adequate gas, reserves, oxygen-exposure limits, thermal protection, team capacity and contingencies.
Can I use pure oxygen for decompression?
Tec 45 allows a single decompression gas containing up to 100 percent oxygen. The selected gas must be properly analysed and used only at the planned switch depth within its maximum operating depth and your training.
Do I need backmount doubles?
Tec 45 uses double cylinders, which may be backmount or an approved technical sidemount configuration. You need suitable competence in the selected configuration and instructor approval.
Is all equipment included in the $795 price?
The current public listing does not define complete inclusions. Confirm learning materials, certification, doubles or sidemount equipment, decompression cylinder, computers, gases, fills and boat or site fees directly with Abyss.
Is the course completed by attending every session?
No. Tec 45 is performance-based. Certification requires satisfactory completion of all applicable knowledge, planning and in-water requirements. Additional development or rescheduling may be needed.
Tec course booking terms
Cancellation and transfer policy
Tec 40 and Tec 45 run with very small groups and require substantial advance commitments for instructors, equipment, gases, boats and course resources. Short-notice changes are therefore costly and the following course-specific policy applies.
All cancellations
A $25 administration fee applies to every cancellation. Where a time-based cancellation fee also applies, it is charged in addition to this administration fee.
8–21 days before theory
Cancelling or transferring between 8 and 21 days before the scheduled theory session incurs a $210 fee.
7 days or fewer before theory
Cancelling or transferring seven days or fewer before the scheduled theory session incurs a $525 fee. This replaces the 8–21-day fee; the two time-based fees are not combined.
Changing to another date
Any applicable transfer fee and any increase in the new course price must be paid. If the new course costs less, no credit or refund is provided for the difference.
Preparation, attendance and changes after commencement
- Homework and prerequisites: If required theory work is incomplete, or certification, logged-dive or medical prerequisites have not been met before the scheduled theory session, you cannot begin the course. Your booking must be transferred and a $210 transfer fee applies.
- Changes after the course starts: If you request to move any remaining course session to different dates after commencing, your booking must be transferred and a $210 transfer fee applies.
- Late arrival: Arriving more than 20 minutes after the stated start time may prevent you from participating. If your booking must be moved to another course date, a $210 transfer fee applies.
