Ready to Break Through Your 18-Meter Depth Limit?
As a certified open water diver, you’ve discovered the underwater world’s beauty, but you’re restricted to shallow reef dives while experienced divers explore dramatic deep walls, historic wrecks, and encounter grey nurse sharks at Sydney’s legendary dive sites. The PADI Advanced Open Water Course eliminates these limitations and builds the confidence and skills you need to safely explore deeper waters. No lengthy classroom sessions or stressful written exams – just five adventure dives that transform your diving experience.
Why Choose Advanced Open Water Certification?
Advance from basic to confident explorer with skills that unlock Sydney’s best diving:
-
Dive to 30 Meters Deep – Access iconic sites like Magic Point, Bare Island’s deeper sections, and historic shipwrecks
-
Master Underwater Navigation – Use compass techniques and natural navigation to explore confidently with your dive buddy
-
Experience Boat Dives – Explore Sydney’s vibrant marine life and iconic underwater landscapes during guided boat dives
-
Master Essential Specialty Skills – Focused training in deep diving, underwater navigation, buoyancy control, and underwater naturalist skills tailored for Sydney’s dive environment

Step 2: Deep Dive and Navigation Training Master essential skills during two mandatory dives – deep diving to 30 meters and underwater navigation using compass and natural techniques. Your PADI instructor guides you through each skill safely.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many logged dives do I need beyond my Open Water certification? Just your PADI Open Water Diver certification and minimum age of 12. No additional logged dives required, though some diving experience helps build confidence.
Can I complete the course if I don’t own scuba gear? Absolutely! We provide all the equipment needed including BCD, regulator, wetsuit, and specialty items like underwater compass. Many students use gear rental to try equipment before purchasing.
What dive sites will we use for the adventure dives? Depending on conditions, we utilise Sydney’s best locations, including Shelly Beach for navigation training, Bare Island for the shallower dives, and Magic Point for the deep dive and boat modules, giving the added benefit of diving with grey nurse sharks. Various other sites are used for your chosen specialty dives.
Is the Advanced course harder than Open Water? Most students find it easier and more fun! There’s no written exam, and you’re building on skills you already have rather than learning everything from scratch.
What specialties can I choose for my three adventure dives? At Abyss, our instructors have carefully selected the modules to best suit the Sydney diving environment, ensuring that divers graduating from the course are exceptionally well-trained for local conditions.
Why should I add Nitrox certification to my Advanced course? Enriched Air Nitrox extends your bottom time and reduces surface intervals between dives – essential for boat dives and multiple-dive days. Our bundle saves you money compared to taking courses separately.
