What is AHCLPW307?
AHCLPW307 Perform restricted diving for scientific purposes is a current Australian nationally recognised unit of competency for supporting scientific research, monitoring and inspection using open-circuit SCUBA with compressed air and enriched air nitrox. Successful completion produces a Statement of Attainment for the unit—not a full AQF qualification, a recreational certification or unrestricted authority to undertake every kind of commercial diving work.
The unit’s scope—and what it does not do
The national register describes AHCLPW307 as the skills and knowledge required to support a diving expedition for scientific research, monitoring and inspection. It covers the complete work cycle: interpreting the scientific objective, planning the operation, preparing the team and equipment, conducting air and EAN dives, responding to emergencies, caring for equipment, debriefing and reviewing the program.
Release 1 of AHCLPW307 was introduced in December 2020 and superseded AHCLPW305. The unit was redesigned to align with Australian occupational-diver standards. It applies to people working under broad direction who exercise judgement in completing scientific-diving tasks.

Plan the operation
Interpret objectives, determine the dive profile and identify team, equipment, consumables, permits and controls.
Prepare the dive
Confirm roles, complete briefings and checks, analyse breathing gas and ready scientific and emergency equipment.
Conduct the work
Perform approved scientific, search and survey tasks using compressed air or EAN within the dive plan.
Respond to incidents
Apply emergency, rescue, first-aid and oxygen procedures in simulated workplace scenarios.
Care for equipment
Check, clean and store diving, communication, safety and scientific equipment after the operation.
Debrief the team
Review the dive, record outcomes and identify incidents, equipment issues and follow-up actions.
Review the program
Evaluate results and recommend changes to procedures, controls and future dive plans.
Restricted is not unrestricted. AHCLPW307 does not replace the qualifications required for construction, welding, offshore or other commercial-diving roles outside this unit’s scientific scope. It also does not automatically authorise a person to dive at work. The employer or PCBU must still confirm the worker’s competence and medical fitness and apply the relevant law, standards, supervision, risk assessment, dive plan and site procedures.
The four nationally endorsed prerequisite units
AHCLPW307 has four named prerequisite units. Provide the RTO with your Statements of Attainment before paying or booking travel. A recreational course name may reflect similar experience, but it is not automatically interchangeable with a nationally recognised unit code.

This is an occupational dive medical
Abyss currently requires an occupational certificate of medical fitness issued within the previous 12 months, valid for the course dates and completed in accordance with AS/NZS 2299.1 by a registered medical practitioner appropriately trained in underwater medicine.
That is different from a standard recreational-diving questionnaire. Ask the course team to confirm the required wording, validity period and submission deadline before arranging the examination.
What the practical assessment involves
Abyss advertises a six-day practical program with two confined-water sessions and 12 open-water dives, supported by assigned pre-study. The national unit requires competency to be demonstrated in real or realistic open-water conditions with a dive team, workplace documentation and the specified diving, safety, communication and scientific equipment.
One open-water dive in this depth band; all assessment remains at no greater than 30 m.
Each at 2–9 m for at least 20 minutes.
Planning, communication and task performance in low-light conditions.
Boat-based procedures form part of the open-water evidence.
These include simulated decompression stops during ascent.
Preparation, analysis, planning and use of enriched-air nitrox procedures.
No planned decompression dives. The unit includes DCIEM table calculations and simulated decompression stops, but the actual training dives must remain within the approved no-decompression profile. Several evidence categories may be collected on the same dive; the approved training and assessment plan determines how evidence is gathered.
Assessment also covers dive-risk assessment, operational planning, gas analysis, search techniques, scientific survey methods, basic rope work, non-powered hand tools, diver-to-diver and diver-to-surface communication, rescue response, first aid and oxygen, records, debriefing and equipment care. Attendance alone does not guarantee a successful outcome: every required skill and item of knowledge must be demonstrated to the assessor’s standard.
Where AHCLPW307 fits in a diving career
AHCLPW307 can be relevant to people supporting marine science, environmental monitoring, natural-resource management, underwater research, maritime heritage and university scientific-diving programs. Its value is strongest when it complements the person’s scientific or technical role and the requirements of the organisation that will conduct the diving work.
It is not a job guarantee and it does not turn a recreational diver into an unrestricted commercial diver. Before enrolling, ask the employer, university or project lead which qualification, authorisation, logged experience and medical standard their diving program actually requires.
Develops recreational diving knowledge and skills. It does not by itself provide the nationally recognised occupational unit outcome.
A standalone nationally recognised unit for restricted scientific-diving support tasks. Successful candidates receive a Statement of Attainment.
Different qualifications and competence requirements apply to construction, welding, offshore and other work outside the AHCLPW307 scope.
The employer or PCBU still decides whether a person is competent, medically fit and authorised for the proposed task under the applicable law and dive plan.
Do not confuse similar terms. The unit title uses “restricted diving”, while legislation may use terms such as “limited scientific diving work” with a specific legal definition. They are not automatically identical. The RTO, employer or PCBU and relevant regulator should confirm how the rules apply to the proposed work and jurisdiction.
Australian and US pathways are not interchangeable
AAUS is a United States organisational framework, while NOAA Corps and FBI dive roles are US federal employment pathways. AHCLPW307 does not confer those statuses. An employer, university, regulator or overseas program decides which Australian or overseas evidence it accepts.

Do not assume that standard dive equipment, exposure protection, gas, cylinders, boat costs or specialist scientific-diving equipment are included. AHCLPW307 is a nationally recognised unit of competency. After successful completion, the VET outcome is a Statement of Attainment for that unit rather than a full Australian Qualifications Framework qualification or a recreational certification card.
Who issues the AHCLPW307 Statement of Attainment?

How deep is the AHCLPW307 assessment?
Open-water assessment is conducted at depths no greater than 30 metres and includes one dive between 27 and 30 metres. The approved dive plan, conditions and no-decompression limits still apply.
Does the course include decompression diving?
No planned decompression dives are required. Candidates use DCIEM tables and complete simulated decompression stops during selected ascents, while the actual training dives remain within no-decompression requirements.
How many dives are in the Abyss course?

Does AHCLPW307 qualify me for every commercial-diving job?
