Completing your Open Water course is a major achievement—but it does not mean you are already an Advanced Open Water Diver. The PADI Advanced Open Water course is the next supported step: five Adventure Dives that let you practise new skills with an instructor beside you.

Despite its name, the course is not reserved for expert divers. It is designed to help certified divers gain experience, reduce task loading and discover which kinds of diving they want to pursue next. You can take it while your Open Water skills are still fresh, or after gaining more recreational experience.

Build confidence through real diving

Confidence develops through successful experience—not simply by collecting logged dives. Advanced Open Water gives you five structured dives with an instructor available to brief, observe and coach you. That support lets you concentrate on becoming calmer, more comfortable and more independent.
Improve the skills that make every dive easier

Buoyancy and navigation affect almost every dive you make. Refining weighting, trim, hovering, compass use and natural navigation can reduce effort, improve air use and help you stay aware of your buddy and surroundings.
Experience deeper diving under supervision

The Deep Adventure Dive introduces planning, gas awareness, narcosis awareness and controlled ascent procedures in a supervised setting. For divers aged 15 and over, the certification can support diving to a maximum of 30 metres—but every future dive must still suit your training, experience, comfort and the conditions.
Become more comfortable with boat diving

Boat procedures can feel unfamiliar when you are newly certified. Practising briefings, entries, exits, descents and equipment routines with an instructor makes future Sydney charters, dive weekends and overseas holidays easier to approach.

Some deeper sites, wrecks and more challenging dive experiences require Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent experience. What the Abyss Advanced Open Water weekend involves

The current Abyss Sydney program combines knowledge development with five coached dives over two days: Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Navigation, Underwater Naturalist, Deep and Boat. The two boat dives are planned for Magic Point where conditions allow.

Day one

Three shore dives focused on buoyancy, navigation and preparation for deeper diving.

Day two

Two boat dives applying deep- and boat-diving procedures in a real Sydney environment.

Before the course

Complete the assigned PADI eLearning, medical questionnaire and equipment arrangements.

Magic Point is planned, not guaranteed. Weather, sea conditions, diver suitability and safety determine the final site. A suitable alternative is used when required.

PADI Advanced Open Water questions

Do I need lots of logged dives before starting?

No fixed number of post-certification dives is required for most adult candidates. Many divers continue while their Open Water skills are fresh. If you have not dived recently or feel uncertain about essential skills, ask whether a scuba refresher would be the better first step.

Is Advanced Open Water much harder than Open Water?

It introduces broader environments and new procedures, but it is an experience-based course rather than a test proving you are already an expert. Each Adventure Dive includes preparation and instructor support so you can develop progressively.

Can I enrol if my Open Water certification is not from PADI?

Recognised entry-level certifications from other training organisations may be accepted. Contact Abyss if you are unsure whether your certification meets the entry requirements.

Does Advanced Open Water automatically make every dive suitable for me?

No. Certification expands the dives you can consider, but you must still assess depth, conditions, recency, equipment, supervision and your own comfort. Continue building experience on dives that match your ability.
