Scuba Diving Course Cost: What You’ll Really Pay
At Abyss, the PADI Open Water course is $699 all-inclusive. Here is what that price covers, what can still cost extra and how to compare dive courses properly.
The short answer
How much does it cost to learn to scuba dive in Sydney?
The Abyss PADI Open Water course costs $699. That is the complete course fee for a standard beginner place: PADI eLearning, all required scuba equipment, pool training, four ocean dives, PADI certification and student dive injury and evacuation insurance are included.
Your only potential training-related extra is a doctor’s fee if your medical questionnaire indicates that you need dive medical clearance. Abyss provides transport to and from the dive sites during the practical training days. You are responsible for getting to Abyss, although students travelling by train can arrange pickup from Kogarah Station. Home pickup is not provided. Meals and ordinary personal items are also your responsibility.
This makes the real scuba diving course cost easier to understand: compare what you will pay from enrolment through certification, rather than comparing the largest number in an advertisement.

Why advertised scuba lessons cost different amounts
The price of scuba diving courses can vary depending on the training agency, group size, schedule, equipment policy and what the advertised fee leaves out. Before you pay, ask for the full price required to become certified—not just the initial deposit or practical-session fee.
Check the learning materials
Confirm whether digital learning and certification processing are already in the price. If they are added later, a cheaper-looking course may not stay cheaper.
Check every in-water session
A full Open Water course includes confined water training and four open water dives. Ask whether pool entry, site fees and every required practical session are covered.
Check equipment and support
Find out whether you must buy personal gear before training, how many students share an instructor and what happens if you need more time with a skill.

Certificate or licence?
What does a “scuba diving licence” actually mean?
People often search for a scuba diving licence cost, but recreational divers do not normally receive a government-issued licence. You earn a certification from a recognised training agency after completing the required knowledge development, confined water skills and open water training.
At Abyss, that qualification is the PADI Open Water Diver certification. On successful completion, it allows you to dive with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18 metres, within the limits of your training and experience. PADI certifications are recognised by dive operators around the world.
The certification does not expire. If you stop diving for a while, however, a scuba refresher program is a sensible way to review skills before returning to open water.
What your fee pays for
From first lesson to certified scuba diver
Good training is more than hiring dive equipment for a weekend. It is a continuous learning process that combines online theory, practical sessions and real ocean experience under an instructor’s supervision.
Online theory and preparation
Complete PADI eLearning, covering safety, dive planning, underwater physics, equipment and problem management. You also complete the medical declaration before in-water training.
Pool skills, then the ocean
Confined water training lets you learn one skill at a time. When you are ready and conditions are suitable, you complete your first ocean dive.
Complete your four dives
Apply your skills on the remaining open water dives at suitable Sydney locations, then earn your PADI certification after meeting all course requirements.
Water skills: You do not need to be a competitive swimmer, but you must be comfortable in the water and complete a 200 m swim plus a 10-minute float or tread-water check.

What might you spend after the course?
Your certification is the beginning, not a requirement to buy a complete scuba kit immediately. Future costs depend on how often and where you dive.
More diving
Sydney shore dives can have no entry fee, while guided shore dives, boat dives and travel have separate costs. Keep diving in suitable conditions while your skills are fresh.
Personal equipment
Many new divers begin with fit-sensitive items such as a mask, snorkel, fins, boots and wetsuit. Rent larger gear until you know what suits your diving.
Further training
Advanced Open Water, Nitrox and specialty courses are optional future steps. Choose them when they support the kind of sites, depths or adventures you want to explore.

Do I need a dive medical?
Everyone completes a dive medical questionnaire. You only need clearance from a doctor if your answers indicate it is required. Arrange any required clearance before the practical training dates.
Does a scuba certification expire?
No. Your PADI Open Water certification does not expire. If you have not dived for some time, complete a refresher and return in conditions appropriate to your recent experience.
Is PADI Open Water suitable for a complete beginner?
