How Deep Can You Scuba Dive?

The useful answer is not a record. It is the shallowest limit set by your certification, breathing gas, dive plan, conditions, experience and comfort.

The short answer

Most recreational scuba diving finishes at 40 metres

A PADI Open Water Diver aged 15 or over is trained to dive to 18 metres, an Advanced Open Water Diver to 30 metres, and a Deep Diver to a maximum of 40 metres. Forty metres is the accepted recreational diving limit, not a target for every diver or every day. Most scuba divers spend their scuba diving time at shallower depths. Going beyond recreational no-decompression limits requires separate technical diving training, equipment, gas planning and experience.

Scuba diving depth limits by certification

When people ask, “How deep can you scuba dive?”, they often expect one number. In practice, your certification describes the maximum depth for which you have been trained. For a recreational diver, these scuba diving depth limits are not performance targets. The dive itself may need to be shallower because of the site, your recent experience, the breathing gas, your buddy, your remaining gas supply or the conditions on the day.

Junior depth and supervision limits differ. For example, PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Divers aged 12-14 have a 21-metre maximum rather than the adult 30-metre limit. Junior scuba divers must always apply the restrictions printed for their age and exact certification.

A maximum depth is permission, not a promise

An Advanced Open Water certification does not mean every 30-metre dive is appropriate. A newly certified recreational diver in warm, clear water may need a shallower limit when facing cold water, current, low visibility or an unfamiliar boat entry. Experienced scuba divers also choose shallower depths when that creates a better, longer or more relaxed scuba diving experience.

Forty metres is the recreational ceiling

The PADI Deep Diver specialty course develops the knowledge and supervised deep diving experience to dive as deep as 40 metres/130 feet within recreational no-decompression limits. It does not certify planned staged-decompression diving. At 40 metres, the no-decompression time and gas supply can disappear quickly, so a recreational diver needs to recognise when a shallower plan is the appropriate limit rather than chase the maximum depth.

What changes during deep diving?

Water pressure increases by about one atmosphere for every 10 metres of seawater. Including the atmosphere at sea level, the surrounding pressure is approximately 2 ATA at 10 metres, 3 ATA at 20 metres, 4 ATA at 30 metres and 5 ATA at 40 metres. That rising pressure affects a scuba diver’s gas use, buoyancy, breathing gas and decompression exposure.

Deep diving makes several limits arrive at once. You use gas faster, absorb inert gas more quickly, have less no-decompression time, travel farther from the surface and may experience stronger narcosis. Cold, darkness, current and task loading can make a deep scuba diving plan more demanding again.

Your breathing gas runs down faster

At 30 metres, the ambient pressure is about four times the pressure at the surface. At the same breathing effort, a scuba diver consumes roughly four times the surface volume of gas. Work, stress, current and poor trim can increase consumption further.

No-decompression time becomes shorter

There is no universal “depth without decompression”. A no-decompression limit depends on depth, time, previous dives, surface intervals, breathing gas and the model used by your computer or tables. A safety stop is not the same as a required decompression stop.

Narcosis can affect judgement

Nitrogen narcosis, more broadly called gas narcosis, can alter thinking, coordination and perception during deep diving. Susceptibility differs between scuba divers and dives. Any recreational diver can be affected. Training emphasises recognition, communication and moving to a shallower depth rather than trying to “push through”.

Oxygen exposure creates another limit

Every breathing gas has an oxygen partial-pressure limit and maximum operating depth. High partial pressures of oxygen can cause central nervous system toxicity, including a seizure. Gas analysis, correct computer settings and MOD discipline are essential.

Small problems carry greater consequences

An equipment failure, lost buddy, buoyancy problem or unexpected current leaves less gas and a longer ascent from deeper depths. That is why dive planning, reserve gas, team procedures and suitable equipment become increasingly important.

The environment may set the real limit

Visibility, temperature, surge, current, marine life, overhead hazards and the entry or exit can matter more than the number on a depth gauge. For many scuba divers, the safest maximum depth is often shallower than the certification limit.

Does Nitrox let you dive deeper?

No - enriched air Nitrox is not a depth-extending gas. It contains more oxygen and less nitrogen than ordinary compressed air. On a suitable dive profile, that can reduce nitrogen exposure and provide more no-decompression time, which is useful for repetitive boat dives, photography, liveaboards and dive travel.

The higher oxygen fraction also creates a maximum operating depth. Common Nitrox mixes can have an MOD shallower than the 40-metre recreational limit. Scuba divers must analyse the cylinder, record the oxygen percentage, set the dive computer correctly and remain within the planned oxygen exposure. For scuba divers using enriched air, Nitrox can support an appropriate deep diving plan, but the gas does not replace Advanced, Deep Diver or technical training.

How do technical divers go beyond recreational limits?

Technical diving includes scuba diving that exceeds recreational depth or no-decompression boundaries. Depending on the qualification and dive, technical divers may use redundant gas supplies, decompression cylinders, mixed gas, helium-based breathing gas mixtures, open-circuit scuba or closed-circuit rebreathers.

Those systems do not remove risk. Technical divers require disciplined gas planning, decompression procedures, equipment familiarity, team skills and extensive training. Helium can reduce the narcotic loading of a breathing gas, but the full plan must also manage oxygen exposure, gas density, carbon dioxide, decompression and the breathable range of every gas.

PADI Tec 40 is a bridge into limited technical decompression diving, not a ticket below 40 metres. Further technical diving education through Tec 45 and Tec 50 progressively extends depth and decompression scope for scuba divers who meet the experience and training prerequisites.

Who holds the deepest scuba dive world record?

Ahmed Gabr of Egypt holds the Guinness World Record for the deepest scuba dive, reaching 332.35 metres in the Red Sea off Dahab on 18 September 2014. The previous Guinness record was 318.25 metres, achieved by South African diver Nuno Gomes in 2005.

The old version of this article incorrectly credited Gabr’s 332.35-metre dive to Gomes in one section and to Gabr in another. The correct record-holder is Ahmed Gabr. This extreme, heavily supported deep diving record is not a comparison point for recreational scuba divers and should never be treated as an attainable depth through ordinary scuba diving training.

What about commercial, military and saturation divers?

Commercial and military divers work under specialist occupational systems that can include surface-supplied breathing apparatus, chambers, bells and large support teams. Saturation divers live under pressure so that repeated work at depth does not require full decompression after every excursion. Chamber exposures and saturation records are different categories from an open-water scuba record.

Choose training for the diving you want to do

Do not chase depth for its own sake. Choose the course that removes a real barrier: more supervised experience, access to deeper recreational sites, better repetitive-dive planning or a disciplined transition into technical diving.

How deep can you scuba dive as a beginner?

A certified adult PADI Open Water Diver is trained to dive with a buddy to a maximum of 18 metres/60 feet, or the shallower maximum depth reached during training. A PADI Scuba Diver has a 12-metre/40-foot limit and must dive under direct professional supervision. Junior restrictions differ.

How deep can a human dive before being crushed?

There is no simple scuba depth at which the whole human body is suddenly crushed. Body tissues are largely water, but gas-filled spaces such as the ears, sinuses, mask and lungs are affected by pressure and must be managed correctly. Long before a dramatic “crush depth”, an untrained or poorly planned dive can cause barotrauma, gas narcosis, oxygen toxicity, loss of gas or decompression illness.

Can you scuba dive to 100 metres?

One hundred metres is far beyond the 40-metre recreational limit. It is an extreme technical dive requiring advanced mixed-gas training, extensive experience, specialised equipment, a suitable team and a detailed gas and decompression plan. Recreational certifications, a standard single cylinder and ordinary no-stop planning are not appropriate for such depths.

Can humans dive to 600 metres?

Not as an ordinary open-water scuba dive. The Guinness scuba record is 332.35 metres. Humans have experienced pressures equivalent to more than 600 metres in saturation-diving research and hyperbaric chambers, but that is a different activity using specialist life-support systems and staged compression and decompression.

How deep can you dive without decompression stops?

There is no single no-decompression depth. Your no-decompression limit is a combination of depth and time, modified by previous dives, surface intervals, breathing gas and the dive computer or table being used. Even a dive within a displayed NDL does not guarantee zero decompression-sickness risk. Stay within training, plan conservatively and follow the current computer throughout the dive.

Does a larger scuba tank let you dive deeper?

No. A larger cylinder may carry more gas, but it does not change your certification, breathing-gas MOD, no-decompression limit, experience or the site conditions. Gas quantity is only one part of the dive plan. The team still needs an appropriate turn pressure, reserve and ascent plan.

What is the deepest scuba dive ever recorded?

Guinness World Records recognises Ahmed Gabr’s 332.35-metre dive at Dahab, Egypt, on 18 September 2014 as the deepest scuba dive by a man. Nuno Gomes held the previous record at 318.25 metres.
