First-time participants learn the essential equipment, safety and underwater skills before making one closely supervised ocean dive. Certified divers take part in a separate two-dive program.

Both pathways explore Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve, but they have different training, age and certification requirements.

First time underwater

What happens on the day?

Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve

A sheltered reserve with genuine ocean conditions

Bushrangers Bay is at Bass Point near Shellharbour, roughly 90–120 minutes from central Sydney depending on traffic. It is a shore-based dive rather than a boat charter.

The reserve supports rocky reef, seagrass and varied marine life. Grey nurse sharks are the headline encounter; wobbegongs, seasonal Port Jackson sharks, rays, blue gropers, reef fish and nudibranchs may also appear.

“Sheltered” does not mean conditions are always calm. Swell, visibility and water movement vary, and the dive team may adjust the plan when safety requires it.

The footage gives you a feel for the environment, but no two dives are alike. Wildlife, visibility and the route through the reserve change from day to day.

Medical fitness, water comfort and safe wildlife diving

“No experience needed” does not mean there are no participation requirements. Scuba diving is physically demanding, and you should have a reasonable degree of swimming ability and be comfortable entering open water.

Every participant must review the diver medical questionnaire. Some answers, medical conditions, medications or recent illness can require clearance from a doctor. Read the form early enough to arrange clearance before your booked day.

Open-ocean diving and wildlife encounters carry inherent risks. Stay with your guide, do not touch, chase or block marine life, and follow every instruction during the briefing and underwater. Grey nurse sharks are generally calm when left undisturbed, but respectful behaviour is essential around every animal.

Bushrangers Bay shark dive FAQs

Is this scuba diving or swimming at the surface?
It is a scuba experience below the surface, not a surface swim or snorkel. Non-certified participants learn and practise the required entry-level skills before one supervised ocean dive.
Do I need scuba certification or previous experience?
No. Beginners join the PADI Discover Scuba Diving pathway with instruction and direct supervision. Certified divers follow the separate two-dive pathway.
How many dives are included?
Non-certified participants complete one supervised ocean dive. Certified participants complete two guided ocean dives. Confirm the details attached to your selected date before booking.
What are the minimum age and medical requirements?
The current Abyss product minimum is 12 for non-certified participants and 10 for certified participants. Minors must be accompanied by a guardian. Everyone must review the medical questionnaire, and some answers require a doctor’s clearance.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You should have a reasonable degree of swimming ability and feel comfortable entering open water. Contact Abyss before booking if you are uncertain whether the experience is suitable for you.
Is there a shark cage?
No. This is uncaged scuba diving in an open-ocean aquatic reserve. There is no cage or glass barrier between divers and the surrounding marine environment.
Are grey nurse sharks guaranteed?
No. Grey nurse sharks are regularly encountered at Bushrangers Bay, but they are wild animals. Sightings, numbers and other marine life vary and cannot be guaranteed.
Is shark diving safe?
The day is instructor-led and carefully managed, but no scuba or open-ocean wildlife activity is risk-free. Grey nurse sharks are generally calm when left undisturbed. Follow the briefing, stay with your guide and never touch or chase wildlife.
Where is Bushrangers Bay, and is transport available?
Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve is at Bass Point near Shellharbour, roughly 90–120 minutes from central Sydney depending on traffic. Optional return transport from Abyss in Ramsgate is available for an additional charge on suitable dates.
What is included, and what should I bring?
Standard scuba equipment, instruction or guiding, and professional digital photos are included. Bring swimmers, a towel, water, suitable clothing, your booking confirmation, any required medical clearance and certification details if applicable.
Can the beginner dive count toward Open Water certification?
It may count toward Dive 1 when Abyss completes the required skills and training record and you upgrade to the Abyss PADI Open Water course within 30 days. Ask the team to confirm the current upgrade conditions.
What if ocean conditions are unsuitable?
Swell, visibility, weather and water movement can affect the plan. Follow any update from Abyss and the directions of the dive team. Your booking confirmation and current terms explain how operational changes are handled.
I am certified—should I choose Bushrangers Bay or Magic Point?
Bushrangers Bay is a shore-based two-dive option for certified participants. Magic Point is Sydney’s classic grey nurse shark boat dive. Use the Sydney shark dive comparison to choose the format that suits you.
