PADI specialty course • Confined water and two ocean dives
Learn to select, fit and use a dry suit with suitable thermal layers. Begin in confined water, then practise buoyancy, suit-gas management and emergency procedures across two instructor-guided ocean dives.
Thermal protection for cooler water
Unlike a wetsuit, a dry suit is designed to limit water entry and allow insulating undergarments to be worn beneath it. That can make colder-water diving more comfortable and expand the conditions in which a properly equipped diver may choose to dive.
Dry-suit diving also introduces new skills. Suit gas changes with depth, can shift around the body and must be added or vented in a controlled way while you continue managing your BCD, depth and ascent.

Develop dry-suit familiarity before a trip instead of learning unfamiliar equipment for the first time at the destination.
Fit, control and care
Build a practical routine for preparing, diving and caring for a dry suit and its valves.
Consider suit type, fit, seals, valve placement, thermal layers and the mobility needed for the planned dive.
Put the suit on without damaging seals, connect the inflator correctly and check the zipper, valves, seals and hose before entering.
Adjust weight for the suit, undergarments, cylinder and other equipment, then practise controlled descents and ascents.
Add enough gas to reduce squeeze, maintain a stable position and vent expanding gas early during the ascent.
Practise recovering from changing body position and managing gas that shifts toward the legs or creates an unwanted ascent.
Learn the appropriate response to an inflator that continues adding gas or an exhaust valve that does not vent as expected.
Rinse, dry, inspect and store the suit, zipper and seals in line with the manufacturer’s guidance.
Choose conservative dive objectives and recognise when cold, a leak or reduced dexterity means the dive should end.
Course structure
Finish the online knowledge development before the scheduled practical day so the in-water training can progress from basic suit orientation to open-water application.
Allow approximately two to four hours for the online theory covering selection, thermal layers, buoyancy, emergencies and suit care.
Become familiar with the suit, establish weighting and practise gas-management and emergency skills in a controlled setting.
Apply dry-suit checks, entries, descents, buoyancy, ascents and exits under instructor supervision in open water.
Conditions matter: ocean sites, schedules, thermal requirements and training objectives may change with weather, water conditions, student readiness and instructor judgement.
Dry-suit equipment
The current Abyss booking page offers dry-suit rental as a separate add-on. Correct sizing, compatible boots or fins and suitable undergarments must be confirmed before the practical session.
A complete scuba setup is also required. Confirm what is included, what you must bring and whether your planned thermal layers are suitable for the course conditions.
Cold-water planning
Cold can affect comfort, dexterity, breathing, judgement and equipment handling. Use appropriate insulation, monitor yourself and your buddy, and end the dive early when cold stress or a leak becomes a concern.
Preparing for a cold-water destination?
Abyss advertises a private option for divers preparing for destinations such as Silfra. A private course can provide focused time to practise suit fit, weighting and gas management before travelling.
Destination operators may impose additional certification, recent-experience, logged-dive, medical, equipment or guided-dive requirements. Confirm those directly with the operator before booking travel.
Before you enrol
You must be at least 10 years old.
PADI Junior Open Water Diver, PADI Open Water Diver or a qualifying entry-level certification.
Complete the required participant medical questionnaire. A doctor’s clearance is needed when the questionnaire directs it or relevant health circumstances require review.

A correctly fitted and maintained suit is designed to limit water entry, but no course can guarantee that a suit will never leak. Seal condition, zipper care, fit and correct use all matter.
