Oak Park begins beside the ocean pool on the southern Cronulla peninsula. Kelp-fringed bedrock, sand channels, low reef, ledges, overhangs and colourful sponge growth create an unusually varied site within a relatively shallow depth range.

There is no need to cover it all. A conservative dive can explore the shallow wall and Split Rock, while longer plans continue towards Rock Pile, Old Tinny, the ceramic “Urinal”, overhangs, the cave, trench and Fish Soup. Conditions, navigation, gas and the complete buddy team decide where the dive should turn.

Underwater orientation

Follow the reef towards Split Rock—then turn for gas, not a landmark

Use the map to understand how the pool-side bedrock, wall, sand and named features relate to one another. It is an orientation aid for qualified divers, not a bearing-by-bearing route. Sand, kelp, visibility and familiar-looking details can change.

  1. Inspect the entry and exit from the shore

    Walk down before gearing up, watch several swell sets and identify the exact movement into and out of the water. The map marks several options around the pool, but no one entry is suitable every day.

  2. Descend across shallow bedrock

    The map begins around 2 metres beside the pool and deepens across kelp-covered rock towards 5 metres. Note where the reef meets sand and fix the return direction early.

  3. Keep the wall-and-sand relationship

    Around 6–7 metres the wall can appear to fade. A small V-shaped sand break may help identify where the more pronounced wall continues, but confirm it with depth and compass rather than one visual cue.

  4. Use Split Rock as a decision point

    Split Rock is shown around 8–9 metres along the established route. It can be a useful turning area for a shorter dive. Its swim-through is optional and should be bypassed whenever training, buoyancy, visibility or surge is unsuitable.

  5. Extend only when the return remains comfortable

    Rock Pile, Old Tinny, the ceramic landmark, overhangs, cave, trench and Fish Soup belong to progressively longer plans. Turn for gas, time, conditions and team comfort—not because the next feature sounds interesting.

Shorter plan

Shallow wall and Split Rock

A first route can stay with the bedrock, sand edge and wall between roughly 5 and 9 metres. This keeps the navigation and return manageable while still offering kelp, sponge growth, ledges and excellent chances to find small marine life.

Extended wall

Rock Pile, Old Tinny and the ceramic landmark

Beyond Split Rock, the mapped route reaches Rock Pile around 8 metres and other distinctive features around 10–11 metres. The wall and ledges can hold giant cuttlefish and eastern blue devilfish, but the longer distance increases gas and navigation demands.

Longer local route

Cave, trench, overhangs and Fish Soup

The outer mapped features sit around 10–11 metres and are not beginner objectives. Treat every cave, tunnel and swim-through as an optional overhead: bypass it unless the whole team has suitable training, buoyancy, visibility, surge control and a clearly visible exit.

Return cue

Use the rising contour, wall, sand edge and compass together

On the way back, check that the depth is decreasing and the terrain matches the planned approach. Do not rely on one rock or patch of kelp. Positively identify the pool-side exit before committing to the final approach.

The exit matters more than the distance covered

Choose the water access for the actual level

The map marks options on both sides of the ocean pool. Tide height, wash, submerged rock, footing and diver mobility decide which movement is controlled on the day; no side should be treated as the automatic choice.

Use low tide as a planning clue—not a promise

Low water is often chosen because it can make the exit shape easier to see and assess. It can also alter the step and water depth at the rock. Watch several sets and confirm every diver can complete both entry and exit with the equipment being used.

Recognise the final approach underwater

Relate the exit to the rising contour, bedrock, sand edge and compass before travelling along the reef. Keep mask and regulator in place until securely clear of the water, and change sites if the return is being washed.

Temperate marine life

Slow down along the ledges and sponge growth

Oak Park rewards careful buoyancy and patient searching more than distance. Look beneath open ledges, along sponge-covered walls, at kelp edges and across the sand without touching or disturbing the habitat. Every animal is wild, seasonal and unguaranteed.

Eastern blue devilfish and blue gropers

Eastern blue devilfish may shelter deep beneath ledges, while eastern blue gropers cruise the reef more openly. Give both species space and never block an animal inside an overhang.

Giant cuttlefish and octopus

Broken reef and continuous overhangs create useful shelter for giant cuttlefish and octopus. Watch for eyes, changing colour and discarded shells rather than reaching into a crevice.

Bull rays, eagle rays and occasional turtles

Large rays may move across the sand or pass over the reef, and turtles are possible visitors. Remain still, keep the animal’s route open and allow it to set the distance.

Port Jackson sharks, seadragons and small specialists

Seasonal Port Jackson sharks may rest around the outer ledges. Weedy seadragons, nudibranchs and other cryptic species reward slow movement and sharp eyes around kelp and sponge habitat.

When Oak Park can work well

  • The chosen entry and exit are calm and controllable for the complete team.
  • The water level allows a clear, deliberate movement onto and off the rock.
  • Visibility supports reliable wall, sand-edge and compass navigation.
  • The planned distance, depth and return gas suit every diver’s recent experience.
  • The team can recognise the pool-side return from underwater.

When to change the plan

  • Swell or long-period sets are breaking across the access or washing the exit.
  • Surge makes the rock, wall or optional swim-throughs difficult to control.
  • Recent rain or suspended sediment makes navigation unreliable.
  • Boat traffic or fishing activity adds unacceptable risk to the route.
  • Any diver is over-weighted, low on recent experience or uncomfortable.

No single swell-height rule guarantees a safe Oak Park dive. Swell can wrap into the rocks from roughly north-east through east to south-east, while longer-period sets may arrive after deceptively quiet lulls. Use Port Hacking tide times as a planning reference; actual wash, surge and water level at the entry and exit take precedence.

Watch several sets, assess footing and water depth, and confirm every diver can enter and leave with the planned equipment.

Agree on route and return gas

Set the intended turning area, maximum depth, turnaround pressure, reserve and response to a missed cue before entering.

Fix buddy and lost-buddy procedures

Review team positioning, communication, separation procedure and the response to an unplanned ascent or reduced visibility.

Stay visible around boat activity

Carry the dive flag or float and surface-signalling equipment appropriate to the route, then brief how and when each will be used.

Make every overhead optional

Bypass Split Rock’s swim-through, the cave and any tunnel unless the complete team has suitable training, buoyancy, gas, visibility and a controlled exit.

Protect the reef and your body

Use sturdy boots and suitable thermal protection, move carefully on wet rock and keep equipment secured away from kelp and sponge growth.

Getting to Oak Park at Cronulla

Arriving at the site

Oak Park is at 156–164 Ewos Parade on the Cronulla peninsula, with foreshore access also available near the end of Jibbon Street. On-street parking can fill on good-weather weekends, so check signs, park legally and assemble without blocking the walkway. Council lists an accessible foreshore path from Jibbon Street; the rocky scuba entry itself is not an accessible water entry.

Useful facilities—and an unpatrolled shoreline

Oak Park Pavilion provides public toilets, changing facilities and showers. The adjacent ocean pool and small beach are not patrolled by lifeguards. Keep the public pool, paths and park usable for other visitors, follow on-site signs and take all loose equipment and rubbish away.
