Why Fuvahmulah is different
Fuvahmulah is unlike anywhere else in the Maldives. As the country’s only single-island atoll, it sits exposed to the open ocean, drawing in large pelagics and creating the kind of shark diving that experienced divers travel the world to find. This is where tiger sharks are seen year-round, where every descent feels like an expedition, and where the next pass could be a thresher, hammerhead, oceanic whitetip, whale shark, or another unforgettable encounter in the blue.

Frequently asked questions
Short, direct answers to help you book with confidence.
Is diving with tiger sharks safe?
Yes, when done correctly. Dives are conducted with professional local guides using established shark-diving procedures. This is controlled, respectful big-animal diving, but it is still advanced diving in open-ocean conditions.
How close do you get to the tiger sharks?
Very close. Tiger shark encounters in Fuvahmulah are often within a few metres, which is exactly why this destination is so highly regarded by experienced shark divers.
Will I see whale sharks or manta rays?
They are possible, but not guaranteed. Fuvahmulah is best known for tiger sharks and other large pelagics. Whale sharks and manta rays should be viewed as exciting bonus sightings rather than the main reason to book the trip.
Why can’t I wear bright coloured dive gear?
The local operator has protocols designed to minimise visual stimulation around tiger sharks. Bright fins, neon wetsuits and flashy gear are not permitted.
What is Tiger Zoo?
Tiger Zoo is Fuvahmulah’s signature dive site and one of the main reasons divers travel here. It is famous for reliable tiger shark encounters and is included in this trip.
What’s the accommodation like?
The Shark Residence is a diver-focused boutique guesthouse offering comfortable deluxe rooms, a relaxed atmosphere, and easy access to the dive operation.
How demanding are the dives?
Expect 3 dives per day, blue-water ascents, and current at times. This is a high-energy pelagic destination suited to divers with solid experience and confidence in the water.
Why is there a night in Colombo?
The routing via Colombo breaks up the journey and makes the trip more manageable, rather than trying to force long, tiring airport transits all in one go.
How many spots are available?
Limited. Fuvahmulah has limited dive and accommodation capacity, so an $850 non-refundable deposit is required to secure your place.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Comprehensive dive travel insurance is mandatory due to the remote location and the nature of the diving.
