What makes Avelo different?

Avelo changes how you manage buoyancy. Its two main components are the Hydrotank, which holds breathing gas and water ballast in separate compartments, and the Jetpack, which combines the harness, backplate, battery-powered pump and controls.

Pumping water into the Hydrotank makes the system heavier; releasing water makes it lighter. This replaces the buoyancy function of a conventional BCD. Because water does not appreciably compress or expand with depth, it removes the changing BCD air bubble from buoyancy management.

1. Develop control with fewer buoyancy corrections

When changes in depth require fewer equipment adjustments, you have more attention available for your position in the water, your buddy and the marine life around you. That can be especially appealing if you enjoy photography or simply want a calmer dive.

The course gives you time to practise that control. You learn how the system responds and how to maintain good trim, rather than assuming new equipment will do everything for you.

2. Experience a lighter, streamlined setup

Avelo is designed to reduce equipment bulk and the weight carried on land. For Sydney shore divers, comfort during the walk to the water and the exit can be a meaningful part of the experience.

The exact saving depends on your existing gear, exposure protection and weighting. During training, you can assess the fit and handling for yourself, including what the setup feels like in a wetsuit suitable for local conditions.

3. Get feedback you can use on your next dive

Will Avelo help you stay underwater longer?

Reduced drag, better trim and less effort may help some divers use breathing gas more efficiently. That is a potential benefit, rather than a guaranteed result or a fixed percentage saving.

Your depth, breathing, conditions, gas reserve and no-decompression limits still shape the dive plan. A more useful first-course goal is to finish with better understanding and control, then assess your gas use over comparable dives as your familiarity grows.

What to expect from your Sydney Avelo course

Abyss's Avelo Dive Course combines three stages:

1. Prepare online. Complete the theory before your practical session.
2. Learn with your instructor. Review equipment setup, operation and procedures.
3. Make two guided shore dives. Put the learning into practice and build familiarity in the ocean.

Do I need to be a certified diver?

Yes, for this Sydney conversion course. If you are new to scuba, booking for a younger diver or returning after a break, contact Abyss to confirm the appropriate pathway and entry requirements.

What equipment should I bring?

Abyss supplies the Hydrotank, Jetpack, regulator, weights and dive computer. Bring your mask, snorkel, fins, boots and suitable wetsuit, or arrange rentals with the team.

Is this the same as the Recreational Avelo Diver course?

You may see the earlier name Recreational Avelo Diver, or RAD. Avelo now calls its certified-diver conversion pathway Avelo Essentials; the local booking page is titled Avelo Dive Course.

Does Avelo control my depth automatically?

No. You operate the system and remain responsible for monitoring and controlling your dive. Training covers normal use and responses to problems; breathing, buddy procedures and controlled ascents remain essential skills.
