Our connection to Sydney's underwater world comes with a responsibility to help protect it.
Abyss Scuba Diving is currently recognised by PADI for its participation in PADI 100% AWARE and Adopt the Blue. These programmes connect action by divers and dive centres with wider efforts to protect the ocean.

What Is the 100% AWARE Partnership?
The 100% AWARE Partnership is PADI AWARE Foundation's programme for PADI Dive Centres and Resorts. It gives dive businesses a structured way to support conservation through direct giving, customer-donor referrals or a combination of both.
PADI AWARE Foundation is a publicly funded non-profit organisation whose mission is to drive local action for global ocean conservation. It brings together divers, dive professionals, communities and partners to turn concern for the ocean into practical action, useful data and stronger protection.
Why it matters
Divers Have a Unique View of the Ocean
Scuba divers see what is happening below the surface. We encounter marine debris, observe wildlife and return to the same reefs through different seasons. That direct connection gives the dive community both an opportunity and a responsibility: to explore carefully, report useful observations and reduce the impact of every dive.
Individual actions matter most when they contribute to something larger. The 100% AWARE Partnership helps connect dive-centre communities with PADI AWARE Foundation's conservation programmes, research-informed campaigns and community projects.

What 100% AWARE Means at Abyss
Partnership status is not a claim that any dive business is environmentally perfect. It is a commitment to keep improving, support credible conservation work and help more divers understand the role they can play.
For Abyss, that means continuing to:
- promote good buoyancy, careful positioning and secure equipment to reduce contact with the seabed;
- encourage respectful encounters without touching, chasing or harassing marine life;
- share reliable conservation information and practical ways for divers to participate;
- support structured conservation initiatives, including PADI AWARE Foundation programmes; and
- connect diver education with responsible habits that continue long after certification.
Abyss is also listed by PADI as an Adopt the Blue participant, linking local engagement with a broader network of monitored underwater sites.

How Every Sydney Diver Can Help
Ocean conservation is built through repeatable choices, not one perfect dive. Whether you are newly certified or have years of experience, you can make your diving more responsible.
- Improve your buoyancy. Better control helps protect sponges, seagrass and other easily damaged marine life.
- Keep your equipment streamlined. Secure gauges, alternate air sources and accessories so they do not drag across the bottom.
- Give wildlife space. Observe natural behaviour without touching, feeding, blocking or pursuing an animal.
- Remove debris only when it is safe. Do not create an entanglement risk or disturb an item that has become habitat.
- Use recognised reporting programmes. Consistent, well-recorded observations are more valuable than isolated estimates.
- Keep learning. Choose diver training that improves your control, awareness and understanding of the marine environment.

Is Project AWARE still the correct name?
PADI AWARE Foundation is the organisation's current name. Project AWARE is part of its history, but current programmes and communications use PADI AWARE Foundation.
Is 100% AWARE a scuba course?
No. It is a partnership programme for PADI Dive Centres and Resorts. PADI AWARE also supports separate conservation education and citizen-science opportunities for divers.
How does the partnership support conservation?
Partner centres can give directly, refer monthly donors or use both approaches. That support contributes to the Foundation's wider conservation infrastructure, community work and advocacy.
