Hideaway Island is one of Efate’s most convenient places to combine reef diving, snorkelling and an island stay. It sits in Mele Bay, a short boat transfer from the mainland, with a sloping house reef, nearby coral sites and the small purpose-sunk Bonzer Wreck. It is also home to Vanuatu Post’s underwater post office, positioned about 50 metres offshore in roughly three metres of water.
The setting is especially attractive to couples or families in which not everyone dives: qualified divers can explore beneath the surface while non-divers snorkel, swim or relax ashore. However, dive-centre services and resort operations have changed over time. Hideaway Island Resort and Marine Sanctuary
Hideaway is a small coral island off Mele Beach on Efate’s western side. The island’s strongest feature is how closely the holiday and the water are connected: the reef begins close to shore, the mainland boat transfer is short and the beachfront setting gives snorkellers and divers access without a long overland expedition.
The resort is the custodian of a protected marine area and provides accommodation, a beachfront restaurant and bar, and water-based activities when operating. The best-known dive sites near Hideaway Island
Dive sites are never guaranteed. The operator should choose each day’s location according to weather, current, visibility, diver certification, recent experience and the condition of the site. These are the three Hideaway-area dives most consistently documented by the Vanuatu Tourism Office.
Hideaway Island House Reef
The house reef shelves away from the island and is known for reef fish such as sweetlips and surgeonfish, with moray eels and smaller subjects hiding in the reef. Its proximity makes it useful for orientation dives, relaxed reef exploration and—when the operator offers them—night dives.
After dark, patient divers may find cleaner shrimp, crabs, nudibranchs and other nocturnal animals. Actual visibility, entry conditions and marine-life sightings vary.
Bonzer Wreck and reef
Bonzer is a small purpose-sunk vessel resting upright near Hideaway Island. The usual dive combines a gradual reef descent, anemone habitat and the wreck, which has developed coral growth and shelter for juvenile fish and small reef creatures.
Published descriptions place the main wreck experience around 18 to 24 metres depending on the route and reference used. Treat it as a wreck dive: follow the local briefing and do not enter an overhead space unless your training, equipment and the guide’s plan specifically support it.
West Side Story
West Side Story is known for a broad staghorn-coral landscape that rises to approximately six metres and extends down beyond 30 metres. Damselfish, anemones and small reef fish can occupy the branching coral, while the site’s scale gives underwater photographers a very different subject from the compact Bonzer Wreck.
Coral reefs change after storms, bleaching, crown-of-thorns activity and ordinary ecological cycles. Ask the dive team about the site’s current condition rather than assuming an older description will match the reef exactly.

What scuba divers should expect
Warm-water diving
Vanuatu’s sea temperature generally ranges from about 22°C to 28°C across the year. Exposure protection is personal, so ask for the current temperature and choose a suit that keeps you comfortable over repetitive dives.
Conditions that still vary
Mele Bay can be sheltered, but wind, rain, tide, current and runoff still affect visibility and boat comfort. Tropical water does not mean every site is calm every day.
Sites for different experience levels
The house reef can support gentle dives in suitable conditions, while deeper profiles, current, wrecks or overhead environments require the right certification, buoyancy and recent experience.
Small and large subjects
Expect reef fish, anemonefish, morays and macro subjects rather than a guaranteed parade of sharks, rays or turtles. Wildlife encounters depend on season, luck and respectful behaviour.

Protecting the reef while you explore
A marine sanctuary is not an underwater petting zoo. Keep a comfortable distance from wildlife, never chase or hold animals, and do not touch or stand on coral. Secure gauges and alternate air sources before entering the water so nothing drags across the reef.
Photographers should be able to hold position without bracing against coral. If your buoyancy is rusty, arrange a refresher or begin with an easier site. Avoid taking shells or coral, limit single-use plastics and use sun protection that does not wash straight into the water immediately before a dive.
The best wildlife photographs come from waiting quietly and allowing the animal to decide whether it remains nearby.

Visit the underwater post office
Vanuatu Post opened the underwater post office at Hideaway Island in 2003. It stands roughly 50 metres offshore in about three metres of water. Visitors can purchase a special waterproof postcard and post it underwater; the card is embossed rather than cancelled with ordinary soluble ink.
Strong snorkellers can duck-dive to the post box, while scuba divers may visit it as part of an appropriate shore activity. A flag indicates when postal staff are in the water, but staffing and opening times vary. If you cannot comfortably reach three metres, ask Hideaway staff for assistance rather than forcing the dive.
