Beginner Scuba Diving Courses

For those new to scuba diving, the PADI Open Water Diver course is the way to go. This introductory program provides certification and teaches enduring skills through a combination of padi e-learning and in-water training. The course starts with online knowledge development, then confined water training, and four ocean dives at some of Sydney’s best dive sites. These sites have easy entry points so beginners can start their dives. Plus, the sheltered habitats at these locations provide a safe environment for new divers. New divers can also explore the kelp forests which are home to lots of marine life.

Depending on their swimming ability, learners can do either a 2-day or 3-day version of the course. The Standard Open Water Course is for those already confident in their swimming ability and is 2 days of intensive training. The Serene Course is for those needing more time to hone their swim skills and is 3 days. For an even more personal experience with dedicated attention from an instructor, students can do the Ultimate Course, which includes one-on-one sessions with a PADI dive instructor.

This diver’s package includes all scuba gear and transportation to various dive sites. It also includes an individual online logbook for each diver. By design this package is done in small groups so each participant gets focused instruction and are under the watchful eye of an instructor as they start their underwater adventure journey.

Advanced Training and Specialties

Divers looking to improve their diving skills have various advanced training options. The Advanced Open Water Diver course is five dives that focus on underwater navigation, deep diving (max 12m at Bare Island), buoyancy control, underwater naturalist and a boat dive at Magic Point with the grey nurse sharks. The tidal flow at Kurnell can affect dive conditions, so it’s important to plan your dives accordingly. Completing this course improves your skills and counts towards PADI specialty certifications for each specialty dive.

Other courses, like the Rescue Diver program, are designed to build confidence and practical diving experience in divers through exercises and simulated rescue scenarios. Training for Enriched Air (Nitrox) allows divers to stay deeper longer and shorten their surface intervals between dives – perfect for multiple dives daily.

Taught by experienced instructors in small groups of learners, these programs will give you the knowledge and skills to do more technical dives safely. Bare Island’s East Side conditions can be tricky even in calm swells, so skill and caution are required. Whatever your goal is to advance your diving skills, you will find a course to suit.

Freediving Courses: Take a Breath

Freediving courses allow you to dive into the underwater world in a way that’s different to scuba diving. By using breath holding and relaxation techniques, freedivers can experience the ocean in its purest form. These courses cater for all levels of divers in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Structured to teach skills such as holding your breath, being calm, and deep equalisation methods, these programs combine classroom learning with pool exercises and shore and boat dives. Freedivers can explore a large kelp forest, which is known for its biodiversity. Sheltered habitats like Seahorse Hotels are also important for endangered marine species. The kelp forests at Shelly Beach are also a great habitat for freedivers to explore. Beginners start at 12-20m and go deeper up to 40m. Upon completing any level of freediving course, you will receive internationally recognised certifications to take your freediving globally. Whether you want to perfect your deep equalisation or just want to experience the freedom of diving on one lungful of air, freediving training is an aquatic adventure.
