Led by experienced marine biologists, Marine Marvels Dives combine relaxed underwater exploration with practical insights into the wildlife you encounter. Instead of simply seeing “a fish” or “a reef”, you begin to recognise habitat clues, hunting behaviour, breeding activity and the subtle shapes that many divers swim past.

Sydney wildlife rewards patient divers
The selected theme, site, season, visibility and natural animal movement determine what may be seen. These are possibilities, not a checklist or promise.
Common or weedy seadragons
Search kelp edges and nearby reef transitions for Sydney’s only naturally occurring seadragon species.
Camouflage specialists
Look for octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, pipefishes, nudibranchs and other small reef animals hiding in plain sight.
Sharks and larger reef fish
Depending on the site and season, encounters may include Port Jackson sharks, wobbegongs, blue gropers and schools of fish.

The right site for the day
Conditions determine the best experience
A good wildlife dive begins with a safe, suitable site. The Abyss team considers swell, tide, current, visibility, entry and exit conditions, the selected theme and diver experience before confirming the plan.
When a seadragon-focused event and conditions align, The Steps at Kurnell is one of Sydney’s best-known shore-diving habitats. This does not mean every Marine Marvels event dives there; your selected option and the day’s briefing remain the authority.
Before you book
Is Marine Marvels right for you?
Marine Marvels is a scuba experience for Open Water certified divers. Suitability depends on the selected event, recent experience, buoyancy, planned site and conditions—not certification alone.
Certification and readiness
- Hold at least an Open Water certification and bring proof of certification.
- Be fit to dive and complete the required liability waiver.
- If you have fewer than 20 logged dives, you must have dived within the previous 12 months.
- Be comfortable with the planned entry, depth and conditions.
- Use controlled buoyancy so the reef and camouflaged animals remain undisturbed.
Equipment and preparation
- Tanks and rental equipment are additional to the base guided-dive price.
- Select any available tank or equipment hire in the booking options and arrange everything in advance.
- Choose exposure protection for the current water temperature and your comfort.

Observe without changing the scene
Responsible wildlife diving is part of the experience
The goal is to see and understand wildlife without touching, chasing, surrounding or repositioning it for a photograph.

Hold neutral buoyancyKeep fins, gauges and alternate air sources clear of reef and kelp.
Leave an open routeNever box an animal in or block its direction of travel.
Use light thoughtfullyAvoid prolonged bright video lights and repeated close flash.
Back away when neededGive space if an animal repeatedly evades the group or changes behaviour.
Clear booking conditions
Cancellations, transfers, late arrivals and weather
Marine Marvels Dives are covered by Abyss’s local-dive booking terms. Please read these conditions before booking.
Dive cancellations and transfers
- More than 3 days before the dive: refund issued, less a $25 administration fee.
- Within 3 days of the dive: no refund.
- Failure to attend: no refund; rebooking is at full cost.
- One free date transfer is permitted with more than 3 days’ notice. Subsequent changes, or transfers within 3 days, incur a $100 rebooking fee.
- Dives may be transferred to another person at any time for a $100 rebooking fee.
- If you fail to complete the scheduled dive or dives during the scheduled time, any remaining dive or dives are forfeited.
Late arrivals
Please arrive on time. Refunds or credits will not be issued for late arrivals, including delays caused by traffic or parking difficulties.
Weather and safety
If Abyss Scuba Diving cancels due to unsafe conditions, including weather, you may transfer to another date within 12 months. Any difference in price at the time of rebooking will apply.
Gear-rental cancellation terms
If rental gear is added to your booking, the following gear-hire cancellation terms apply:
- More than 48 hours before pickup: refund less 20% of the hire fee, minimum $10.
- 48–24 hours before pickup: 50% of the hire fee retained.
- Less than 24 hours before pickup or no-show: 100% of the hire fee retained.

Marine Marvels dive FAQs
Is every Marine Marvels dive a weedy seadragon dive?
No. Marine Marvels is a family of themed Sydney marine-life dives. Select the option whose description matches the wildlife or habitat focus you want.
Are particular animals guaranteed?
No. These are wild animals in a natural environment. Local knowledge and a slow search can improve the chance of an encounter, but the selected theme is not a sighting guarantee.
Where will the dive take place?
The selected event and safe conditions determine the site. Seadragon-focused dives may use suitable habitat around Kurnell, but the final plan can change.
Can a newly certified diver join?
Some events and conditions may suit a recently certified diver, but the listing, recency, buoyancy, confidence, entry and planned depth all matter. Contact Abyss before booking if you are unsure.
Is scuba equipment included?
No. Tanks and rental equipment are additional to the base guided-dive price. Select available extras in the booking options and arrange all required equipment in advance.
