If you work in marine science, other areas of underwater scientific research, as a scientific diver, or in scientific diving programs as part of a university course, then this scientific diver course is what you need to perform restricted diving for scientific purposes.
This is the latest Scientific Diving course, which has recently changed to meet occupational diving requirements. It is now a 6-day program as well as a pre-study. It consists of two confined water, and twelve ocean dives over the program. The course can be done in a group or privately on chosen dates.

Develop the occupational-diving knowledge, practical skills and team procedures needed to support scientific research, monitoring and inspection using SCUBA with air and enriched air nitrox.
Restricted occupational SCUBA
This course is designed for people involved in marine science, environmental monitoring, natural-resource management, underwater research or university scientific-diving programs. It develops the skills to help plan, prepare, conduct, document and review scientific dives as part of an occupational dive team.
You will work with compressed air and enriched air nitrox, scientific survey methods, search techniques, risk controls, emergency procedures and diver-to-diver and diver-to-surface communications.
AHCLPW307 is not a blanket commercial-diving qualification or automatic permission to undertake every form of occupational diving. The employer or PCBU must confirm that the diver is medically fit, competent and suitable for the proposed task. State or territory requirements, relevant Australian Standards, workplace procedures, supervision, risk assessment, the approved dive plan and site conditions still determine what work may be performed.
Your nationally recognised outcome
AHCLPW307 is a nationally recognised unit of competency. It is a standalone unit, so the VET credential issued after successful completion is a Statement of Attainment rather than a full Australian Qualifications Framework qualification.

Build a complete scientific-diving workflow, from interpreting the objective and controlling risk to conducting the dive, recording the work and reviewing the operation.
Interpret objectives, determine the dives, team, equipment, consumables and permits required, and build an operational dive plan.
Assess site and task hazards, apply controls, prepare emergency and rescue procedures and respond to simulated diving incidents.
Use recognised tables and calculations, prepare and analyse breathing gases, and conduct dives within the approved no-decompression profile.
Apply scientific survey methods, search patterns, navigation, basic rope work and non-powered hand tools to achieve defined field objectives.
Use hand, line and voice communications. Abyss also introduces full-face underwater communication systems during confined-water training.
Complete operational records, debrief the dive team, review outcomes and recommend changes to procedures and future dive plans.
Course structure
Abyss advertises this as a six-day practical program supported by assigned online preparation. Training and assessment are substantial because the unit covers occupational planning, scientific tasks, team procedures and emergency response as well as diving ability.
Work through the assigned theory before attendance so you arrive ready for planning, calculations, briefings and assessment.
Use two confined-water sessions to confirm foundation skills and develop the course-specific equipment and communication procedures.
Complete twelve open-water dives across the Abyss program, including the required environmental, depth, boat, EAN and task-based evidence.
Complete the required planning, practical tasks, records and responses to the assessor’s standard before the Statement of Attainment can be issued.
No planned decompression diving: The unit includes decompression-table calculations and simulated decompression stops, but the training dives must remain within no-decompression requirements. Some assessment categories may be demonstrated on the same dive; the approved training and assessment plan determines how the evidence is collected.

Abyss course entry requirements
Abyss currently requires an occupational certificate of medical fitness issued within the previous 12 months, valid for all course dates and completed in accordance with AS/NZS 2299.1 by a registered medical practitioner appropriately trained in underwater medicine. This is not the standard recreational-diving medical questionnaire, and any conditions on the certificate must be followed. Ask the course team to confirm the exact wording, permitted age of the certificate and submission deadline before arranging the examination.
Studying in Australia on a student visa? PADI Asia Pacific states that RTO 6729 is not CRICOS registered and cannot offer its diving and snorkelling VET courses to people studying in Australia on a student visa. Contact Abyss before booking if this may apply to you.

The assessment standard remains the same: Private delivery provides scheduling flexibility but does not change the prerequisites, required evidence or competency standard. Confirm any additional equipment, gas, boat or prerequisite-training costs before paying.

You will not receive a full AQF qualification from this standalone unit. After successfully meeting every requirement, PADI Asia Pacific Pty Ltd, RTO 6729, issues a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for AHCLPW307.
No. It supports restricted occupational scientific-diving work within its scope. Relevant laws, regulator requirements, the employer’s procedures, the approved dive plan, medical fitness and demonstrated competence still apply.
The nationally endorsed assessment conditions require open-water skills to be demonstrated at depths no greater than 30 metres, including one dive between 27 and 30 metres.
No planned decompression dives are required. You will use decompression tables and simulate stops during selected ascents, while the actual training dives remain within no-decompression requirements.
Ask Abyss to review your Statements of Attainment and certifications before booking. The exact prerequisite unit codes must be verified, and any equivalence or recognition decision belongs to the RTO.
